Pi Day
Posted by: Mike-B on 14 March 2018
Today is Pi day - March 14th = 3.14 in USA However in the civilised & mathematics world 22 July (22/7 = 3.14) is the real Pi date. Whatever, I am out for dinner tonite & will be having a steak & ale in celebration - in the worlds best pie restaurant as it 'appens. On 22 July I will go for a Melton Mowbray hand raised Porky
And just to point out that our Pi day is more accurate than the American one!
Yeah but, my pie tonite will be tasty no matter what the math calc says ........
Crown & Tuns, Deddington ---- the pie pub ---- not forgetting Hook Norton's finest
No argument there (particularly with the Hook Norton products!), but both are mere approximations to the perfect Pi (which for me is a home-made fish pie made by Cyan).

My understanding is that there are only approximations for Pi, some being slightly better than others.............
Like pies, we know what the perfect Pi should be, but reality just doesn't quite get us there
Don, there is only one exact Pi - and that is the irrational number π (which by definition cannot be expressed exactly numerically, since, for all irrational numbers, all numerical expressions are approximations).
On the other hand, as far as I'm concerned, Cyan's fish pie is perfectly expressed!
I can remember when I was 31 years, 4 months, 1 week, 5 days, 9 hours, 26 minutes and 53.59 seconds old. That moment seemed to last forever.
For the 22 June (22/7) should we perhaps be eating a Shepherds Pie or one of those "stews with a lid" rather than a hearty full crust pie ... it is only "Pi approximation" day after all!

But today (3.14) is an even less accurate approximation.

So a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie will do. (Do they still make those?)

Not really Huge ... 14/3 just has nothing to do with Pi at all!

Which reminds me of school, where we were recommended to subscribe to a pamphlet, I think called Mathematical Pi. That was recommended as in a letter home to parents with a demand for cash.
Along the bottom of each page was the continuing series of numbers to the calculation of Pi.

Yes, I know. I should have said something like “ there are only approximations for the numerical value of Pi”.
But sometimes, life’s too short, and we are slightly careless with our choice of words
Guilty as charged !
