New way to change VTA on a Decca London Gold.

All you do is bounce the cartridge across the cork matted platter, amazingly the armature (think that’s what it’s called) didn’t beak and Diamond still intact.

played a record and got excessive sibulance so altered arm angle till it improved, ended up with 12” Jelco arm with its arse in the air.

John wright audio who rebuilt my Decca says I’ve probably ( definitely) bent the armature but reckons he can fix and put a new tie on it.

So it’s in the post and I have pressed an old Dynavector 10x4 into action, not a bad cartridge in its day so got music whilst I contemplate what a plonker I am.

Thanks for the sympathy Richard, but isn’t it always the case that just as You get your system to as good as it’s ever been you do something like this.

Hey Ho!!

Well, I do sympathise. I recall some years back when a friend and his young daughters were staying for the weekend, coming down stairs one Sunday morning to find the music room door ajar and said daughters playing with "cars" along the carpet. Only when I cleared my rather bleary eyes did I notice that one of the "cars" was my Aro arm top and very recent Ortofon SPU Royal N...

I wondered how you were doing this, then I googled your phonostage.

Hope you can get the Decca fixed.

OMG Richard that's got to be the worst feeling, at least I have only myself to blame.

John wright is brilliant and is the man when it comes to Decca cartridges, he will have it like new even if it takes a little while so not worried Christopher,Dynavector is high output mc so same setting as Decca.

looking at your TT, it seem you don't have a Decapod installed so if you ever want to try one on the Decca, you better have it installed by the dealer. I tried to fit one myself on my Super Gold and totally wrecked the cartridge!

Ah, thanks for this. I had wrongly assumed that the Decca (which seems to have been around for my entire audio life) is a LOMC.

SII FF Y,

Sorry to go slightly off topic - but thought I would contribute being a fellow Decca London Supergold user.My experience with them over a good 20 years is their not the most refined stylus profile wise but the transients on records and the sheer excitement is something special. The music just sounds so alive with the Decca.

Sorry about your rick with your Decca - feel for you mate

Decca is a moving iron and uses m/m phono stage.

Cat345 if I ever have Deccapod fitted it will not be me doing it, John wright will do it but some feel the flexibility of original mount helps the Decca as there is no suspension as no flexible cantilever.

Tabby cat I agree totally, lots of cartridges do some things better but for an exciting involved and dynamic listen the Decca is supreme

My Decca was bought broken off an ebayer in Denmark and John Wright rebuilt it with a better profile Diamond than original Gold.

Would love to here one of the more expensive designs but worry it could cost me.

Yeah Deccas are magic - This is the one I would love to hear I think it retails at £2000 +........as you say S111 FYY thier not the most polished but if you want excitement nothing comes close

The Decca is back and sounds better than ever, after a bit of a false start involving the left channel making a very funny noise, corrected in quick sticks by John Wright the God of all things Decca cartridge.

We are very lucky to have experts like John, Darren at Class A and many others I have yet to meet or use that keep our oldie but goody gear sounding so good.

apologies forgot to mention the good people in Salisbury.
