New house, some questions on an upgrade
Posted by: El_Soldado on 17 March 2018
I've bought a new house and my UQ2 and System Audio Aura 1's have come along with me. The Aura 1's are a real gem, fast, punchy, not too much bass and were perfect when I was living in apartments. And I just love the qute.
The main living room (4.8 x 4.4m) is where I'm planning to listen to music and watch movies via my projector (with the requisite white wall!). For video I've a few sources via a HDMI switcher, audio de-embedder and optical delay fed into the UQ2. At the moment the Aura 1's struggle to fill the larger room with anything bass-y at all.
I now have a small study (about 2.5m x 2m) that I will be using a fair bit (both for work and personal projects). I previously used Arcam Musos with a Musical Fidelity V90 amp which hasn't really been a success. I'm planning to sell on the V90AMP and keep the Musos perhaps for the smaller living room.
My current thinking is: put the Aura 1's into the study, and buy some nice floorstanders for the main room. I auditioned a few options some months ago: the Quadral Style Chromium 6, Spendor A2, but heard both on a Uniti Atom rather than the Qute. But I'm still unsure if floorstanders are a good idea in that room at all.
The real question comes regarding amplification:
Option 1: buy a used Uniti2, SuperUniti, UnitiLite for the main room, bring the UQ2 into my study.
Option 2: buy something like a Cyrus 6XPD (which includes USB DAC) for the study, leave the Qute in the main room, go for high-efficiency speakers (like the Quadrals) or add a NAP 100.
I know auditioning is necessary for equipment selection, but I could do with some advice on even what overall plan to go with.
