Firmware 2.3.1 - Uniti Range
Posted by: Obsydian on 19 March 2018
Very boring plain Hdmi log.
But am I imagining it or is anyone else's Nova, Atom and Star sounded different - sorry I'm breaking in some new speakers so maybe a speaker change, but this does seem Nova related.
Thanks CHRISSU - Not an option.
But plan to try a factory reset, wonder what version that reverts to, the first (embedded) or most recent ...
The Naim app lets you reapply previous firmware versions for Musos... not sure if it works for the new Unitis and I'm not at home to check. From memory... Go to the firmware page by clicking the streamer icon on the main app page. Click "show previous versions" and then you should see the option to reapply that.

I don't think a factory reset will change the firmware, it will just return all settings to their defaults.

Oooh hopefully - heading home soon will try.
Nope previous versions not shown.
Ahhh bummer... sorry for the wild goose chase. They definitely are on the Musos. Having updated my Atom the other night I too thought it sounded a bit different... hard to describe really... a bit more synthetic... better separation up high but more muddy down below. That said, I had already read this thread when I updated so it's possibly all in my head. I've also had a cold so my ears are probably misbehaving too.

I realise that but it was a long time coming so I thought it might have captured more issues
I agree. Long time coming and still no solution to Multiroom for 'new' Unitis and 'legacy' streamers!!

I think we're stuck.
Are some posts being deleted? I ask because I received an email copy of a post by tony69 on this topic late yesterday, but I don't see it online.
I share the sentiments expressed in his post, and would like to feel that naim were taking notice of the frustration some of us feel. I note that he suggested legal action: whilst it may be bluster and a bit drastic ,maybe that is what is required to stimulate a meaningful response. I find it difficult to believe that naim are struggling to resolve these issues - it's all proprietary software, and - surely - there cannot be that many variables between the devices. I fear that naim will eventually come clean and admit they made false promises: at present their (apparent) head-in-the-sand attitude is not good for its customers.
It's all very well for beta-testers to say things are happening, but some of us have been waiting six months (or more) for features that were promised at launch of these products!!
I think you do underestimate the complexity in making something like multi-room work across what is at least five sets of products (old Uniti, ND* & 272, muso, new Uniti and the soon to be released streamers) with substantial hardware differences between each of them. I doubt threatening legal action would have any positive effect on the situation at all. so why do it?

Hi Blag and David - I did write and as the post couldn’t be edited, I deleted. Legal action was what was passing thru my mind last night when I settled down to another evening of frustration trying to listen to my music.... the issue is that after 8+ months the issues are not resolved. This isn’t about whether multiroom or multi platform is difficult it’s about delivering on the sale contract and the features therein. To be no nearer and neither advising people of it being a forthcoming feature that doesn’t yet work is mismarketing and therefore the entire suite of products are not fit for purpose under the terms of the sale. That’s what infuriated me. The seeming lack of acknowledgement of the issue and any apology.
Sat to listen today and after 30 mins gave up as sound thin and digital, totally lost its mojo : (
I listened to the talking heads once in a lifetime and Coldplay trouble before and after the update (which took about 5 minutes). There was no difference. Then I listened to Eric Clapton Double Trouble (one of my favorites) and everything sounded as amazing as it had prior to the update.
I think you guys might be expecting a difference or your minds are playing tricks on you.

I've felt like this since the update too - we both have Novas - I can't think of a single thing I've played on it since the update that's really made me feel interested in the music, whereas I'd found some real gems in recent weeks on the 'what are you listening to' threads that were incredibly enjoyable before. I almost feel as though the hi-fi magic has gone and been replaced with an off the shelf music centre from Currys given the lack of involvement in the playback.
What are your main sources Obsydian?
I've been almost exclusively playing stuff from Qobuz, often via Chromecast on the iPhone - Qobuz updated their app prior to the update and I'm seeing issues with that - it's now providing artwork for the Nova which it didn't before. Basically many Qobuz tracks seem to play 2-3 secs then restart now which they didn't before, but this started before the firmware update and audio still sounded fine apart from the steraming glitches. The new Qobuz app also seems to restart the curently playing track if the I wake the display and go to the app or switch back from another app to the Qobuz one - did not happen before. Could Qobuz stream quality have got worse with their changes to implement metadata/artwork features?
If the Nova is just handed the address to fetch and play the Qobuz stream via Chromecast rather than the audio itself, why should the Nova be behaving differently and restarting - has the Nova's Chromecast code changed too - I think not as the glitches started a day or two before I updated, just considering other possibilities.
I have another iPhone with the older Qobuz app version on it so will check to see if that still works without glitches (or album artwork!).
I use tidal and that had an update prior to Uniti update.... Tidal is doing similar to what you report on Qobuz on all my Naim streamers - Atom, Qbs, Mu-So.... Atom just got even worse on the streaming after Uniti update. Makes me want to buy a CD player....
I thought I figured out my deterioration in sound, I decided to factory reset again and again, then recall I changed the input volume from 85 to 100.
Set it back, better but for me it's lost that something special.
I think I have reached the end of the Naim road before barely restarting. The Uniti experience has been the worst product experience I have had, brilliant product ruined by poor software and a customer service attitude of its you not our product.
Alley Cat - all Tidal.

I wondered about that too.
I reset in the app too, but it didn't seem to reset anything, esepcially that default volume of 85 remained at 100.
One odd thing, is that when checking the max audio output I played with the slider in case software showed 100, but Nova was on 85, but no difference at all.
When I used the balance slidercompletely left or right, the sound from an individual speaker in some ways sounded better/fuller than from both with the balance in the middle, which is very strange.
I have had a 5 minute play with several inputs - Tidal, unusable, sounds good but runs for 5-6 seconds and stops, continually. Spotify - very slow to respond to the app but I can confirm others views regarding sound, I have a Bose Mini speaker that sounds significantly better than the Atom today..... The Atom sounds trash and quite frankly there are better sub £200 systems. Airplay... Atom will not respond to Airplay connectivity calls....
Another night of watching the TV then... Friday and Saturday night are ALWAYS music night... should have stuck to my Marantz MCR610......

To be fair it sounds as if your network / ISP is not quite right, have you tried locally sourced music off usb or whatever? My Atom is fine after the upgrade with no differences at all
Hi Mercky, network is all good and strong. I have no network issues at all other than with this £2k lump of junk. I have tried several wireless access points, routers, config, fixed IP, auto DNS, etc etc. Even tried IP over mains.... I have a lot on the network and nothing else misses a beat, ever. The Atom barely manages to hit one.... a streamer that doesn’t stream is of limited use. My £350 Marantz was a massive improvement over this and never had unresolvable network issues.
Flac via USB is fine. As one would expect. This would suggest it is all streaming and software of the Atom / partners

Nevertheless, it will be your network. The fact that other things work doesn't mean that your network properly responds to the standard protocols that Naim uses.
You should try turning it all off, restarting your router and any switch, then restart your Atom. And try it with something local like a USB drive before you abandon it completely.....
Good luck anyway.

I’ve been playing tidal for about 3 hours since the update I did this morning and I’ve had no issues with the songs playing on the Star or the app.
