PSU for streamer

I very much doubt it. I would expect NDS on its own to be better than ND5 XS plus 555PS. But I haven't heard these two combinations to compare.

A 1980's walkman is better than an NDS on its own, since it has no internal PS, a bare NDS will produce no sound whatsoever.

Onto the real question, why are you asking it? Do you have a spare 555PS?

I remember asking my dealer a similar question. They said a ND5XS/XPS just elevates the ND5XS abover a bare NDX in performance. But given it costs GBP2K more than a bare NDX in that configuration, it does not give 2K worth of improvement. And then you add a XPS to an NDX and it blows a ND5XS out of the water.

So taking the same logic to what I presume is ND5XS/555PS vs. NDS/XPS, I am sure there are those who have done the comparison. But it makes not much sense IMO. Given that the PSU is one of the most critical components of a system on which everything is built (you could argue the PSU is the hifi and everything else just changes it's function), then a 555PS is going to be limited by what a ND5XS can offer. 

I'd rather have an NDX/XPS than a ND5XS/555 and the former is a few grand cheaper too.

A slightly unfair comparison, nobody supported UPnP in 1980. A 2018 Walkman, on the other hand, does!
