Naim App frustrations
Posted by: Redboxfile on 20 March 2018
When I select the Naim app I can scroll through artists and albums and select the album I wish to play, It plays fine and all is well until I awaken the app to choose a different album or artist. The only options are to pause the album playing or choose a different track from the album playing. I am unable to go "back" to make a new selection from my library. I have to close the app and then open it again to see my library then select a different artist or album
It happens on both my Netgear readynas and my PC running "ASSET" so it is a Naim app issue, unless of course it's a "me" issue in which case any help would be very welcome!
I spoke to naim about this same issue and was told that it was a known issue with the app reconnecting.
The answer is to keep your phone / iPad etc From going to sleep while playing ..then you will keep the same connection to the app and the problem won't be so noticeable
Not ideal but ...
Thanks, at least it's not a "me" issue. Your right it's far from ideal and something Naim should be looking to improve with an update. I sometimes wonder if it's easier to get the CD outta' the rack, these "issues" steal your time.
Thank you, much appreciated.

Just a sec.... the functionality of going back to the selection whilst another source / album is playing is a standard feature of the iOS app....
Could you post some screenshots of the screens you get stuck on?
That wasn't what he was trying to do though ....
Pressing the X at the top right corner closes that screen. There is then a backwards arrow at the top left, which enables you to go back and search for something else, which can be played straight away or added to the play queue.
Mine works exactly as Hungryhalibut describes.

Yes exactly, so does mine. You have to come out of the "Now Playing" screen and all should be revealed.

Exactly - that is what I referring to in my reply...
Sounds to me like the OP is using the android app, while puzzled responders are using the iOS version.
Perhaps that could be clarified?
Thanks for your input, I am using a Samsung Android Galaxy S7 not an Apple product. However I have now found that if I go to the top right (3 x dots) and "clear" the queue I can then get back to "my music", so "Happy Days I think? Another left turn off the road to nowhere...
I'm off to put a record on and make a cup of tea! Lets not forget the music.
Cheers guys
It's been a while since I used the app on an Android device, but when I did, there was no x in the top R corner to close the play queue screen. You just use the Back arrow at the bottom of the screen instead, at least on my device, but I guess that might vary between different devices.
This is a long standing problem in the Android app.
Firstly there's a problem when the app tries to re-connect with the Media Server after Android goes to sleep. This manifests as the 'running circle' on the screen for inordinately long periods of time (this can last for hours). This strongly suggests that the network timeout isn't being handled correctly.
The second problem is when the Media Server is found, but the screen is re-drawn before the data are prepared for display; this is most likely caused by a race error but could be incorrect event sequencing. This error results in a blank screen - and hence there's nothing available to select. This can usually be cured by rotating the device forcing a screen redraw (sometimes a switch of input is also required to force the app to reload the navigation data from the media server). Unfortunately, in their infinite wisdom the developers have decided to disable screen rotation for some devices; on these devices there's no way to redraw the screen so this is also a fatal error.
Both of these are code / design errors with a simple fix. The Android developers know what the fix is, they're just too arrogant to implement it as it'll make their lack of competent design skills obvious to the users.
Unfortunately the Android app leaves a lot to be desired.
Well the app has now been unable to find the media server for the last 7 hours... and yes the media server is online: the control point in the 272 finds it with no problem.
A 7 hour + timeout on a network connection - that's just taking the p**s - complete incompetence.
happens too often ,wants rubbing out and starting again
Today my Star is acting strange - It stops for no reason when playing from tidal. One track starts, plays for some minutes and stops. When I want to play again the ‚play’ triangle doesn’t react. It is very frustrating.
As far as I can tell, the OP has a specific problem where he is unable to close the play queue screen, and the last few posts don't seem to be in any way relevant to this. And just to annoy you even more, I have an Android device I occasionally use with the Naim app, which seems to be stable and well behaved. Must be your networks

Sometimes you need to wait quite a while for the Naim app to catch up (which is super annoying), other times i just close, reopen and restart.
One of the symptoms I get when the app looses the Media Server whilst something is playing is this:
<back> from the current playlist takes you to the UPnP listing for the current playing album
<back> from the UPnP listing for the current playing album takes you to the input selection screen.
Selecting the UPnP input takes you straight to the UPnP listing for the current playing album
<back> from the UPnP listing for the current playing album takes you to the input selection screen.
Repeat ad infinitum.
Functionally, this has the same effect that the OP describes in that you can only select tracks from the currently playing album.
However it's actually caused by the inability of the app to correctly reconnect to the Media Server, instead it just leaves the existing data in the memory, so refreshing the view on the display appears to have no effect.
I get the same thing, Huge, and have reported it to Naim more than once.
Rather annoyingly, the release notes for the most recent version of the app (still over 3 months ago) contain the following:
'Fixed: UPnP Servers - fail to discover after resuming app'.
Well, the timeout on the network connection object used to communicate with the Media Servers is set at more than 24 hours, so there's obviously going to be problems. As I said before that just shows design and/or coding incompetence.
Naim now really need to hand the application over to a different set of developers, the current set are useless. They've had plenty of time to fix it; they obviously just don't know how, even though I know that they've been told how to fix the issue.
All they need to do is publish the api's.
Or, even easier, make it open source and let us fix it!
There's plenty of us here with the experience to setup a dev group; and with our combined brains, the bugs don't stand a chance.
I have recently started seeing the same problem with the Android App and a right PITA it is as well
I'm using the Naim Android app on my Moto G5 phone and the album icons are arranged in groups of three across the screen. Occasionally, when I scroll up or down they will arrange themselves in a random fashion (normally in groups of four) and are totally unresponsive to any form of track selection. When I try scrolling again and then they will sometimes revert to the normal view. I've given up on the Android app and now access the NDX via my missus' iPad (when she allows me to borrow it). Annoying.
