Speakers and speaker cable for unitilite

Posted by: woodley13 on 21 March 2018

So I am a new Naim owner of a Unitilite that I have purchased second hand. This has replaced some Arcam equipment but I still have my old speaker - Monitor Audio S1 (from around 2003) and some silver (possibly QED but can't remember) speaker cable. Does anyone have any suggestions about what suitable upgrades of speaker and cable I might consider. I would like to add a bit more bass weight to the sound. Perhaps sticking with standmounts but would consider floorstanders. Should I just upgrade the speakers possibly but keep the cable or go for the double?

I’d start with Naim NACA5. It just works well with Naim and is relatively inexpensive.

As to speakers - that really depends on what you expect and your budget.

I found NACA5 works well with my Unitilite my speakers are Neat Iota Aplha but speakers are a very personal choice I would suggest you listen to whatever is within your budget before deciding.

I think it would help if you indicate a budget

Unitilite is not very powerfull so if room is large (?) you may need some easy driven floorstanding speakers, s/h I can think of Naim Intro, Rega RS3, Neat Motive or Linn Keilidh, but as someone mention, speakers are very personnal matter so go for a listen is preferred, your MA is allready fine, beeing 15 years old not allways bad.

Many thanks for the replies. The budget would be around £800 to £1000 excluding cable and I would consider second hand options.

I had the unitilite for a time with Proac Studio 118 with NACA5. I found them to be an excellent match.

You will have plenty of speaker options then

If you need short lenghts of speaker cable it shouldn't need to be that expensive, personally I really like my Tellurium Q Black, have used it with my UQ and in a 202/200 setup, excellent performance.

Another vote for TQ Black from me, i used it with a Unitiqute 2 and ATC SCM11 previously and am still using it now that I've moved on to separates driving the same speakers. Its much easier to live with than NACA5 if you have to negotiate obstacles or the layout of a room IMO as its a little less unwieldy.....

Really liked the ATC with the UQ2 although they are even better now but they're a slightly taxing load so it used to run out of go at levels which were fine for me or more correctly SWMBO.......

If you decide on floor standers and are looking to increase bass weight and extension, I would start with cables other than TQ black. It is ok with small box speakers down to around 60hz but for me with 40hz extension floorstanders it acted as a high pass filter, attenuating low bass frequencies compared to naca5, vdh magnum/d302 or Mogami's thicker speaker cable. All of these worked better for me in my system (vdh magnum being my favourite alternative and has a cheap HK based seller on a well known auction site).

For speakers, it's down to finding a brand you like personally, so I've kind of stopped recommending my current ones or ones I've owned in the past. There are however some brands where I have liked everything I heard from them at the respective price points, such as pmc, proac, quad, q acoustics, usher, duvel.
