Current best HDD for Uniti Core

Posted by: IanD on 21 March 2018

I have seen the recommendation for using a Seagate Pipeline HDD in the Uniti Core but those drives don't seem to be readily available anymore (at least in Australia).  Is there a revised recommendation list and if so are the Seagate IronWolf/IronWolf Pro drives recommended?

I have just had my UnitiServe 2Tb fail, fortunately with the HDD still intact.  The local Naim dealer and distributor have generously offered to replace it with a Uniti Core at a significant discount.  They intend to use the drive from the UnitiServe at first instance but I am considering then replacing that drive with a new one, provided I can get the whole backup chain to work well (I have a backup on a NAS drive).

Does anyone have any information/advice for me?

Thanks.

HDDs are cheap so I suggest you do get a new one and not just repurpose the one from your Unitiserve. A key point about the UnitiCore is that unless you put it into deep sleep, the HDD runs 24/7, even when the unit is in network standby, so you need to buy one intended to run all the time. The Pipeline was one of those, but the Seagate site does tell you which others are intended for 24/7 operation.

Phil Harris has previously cautioned against HDDs designed for NAS use as, to explain it in a non-technical way, may try less hard to read and resolve an error as the job of a NAS is to serve all network users, not do a brilliant job for one. So a non-NAS HDD that is designed to run 24/7.

Depending how many CDs you have, you could also think about SSD which although more expensive are of course silent and run cool.
