It arrived! 252/SCDR/300DR , what's next?
Posted by: TomSer on 22 March 2018
This evening I replaced my Supernait2/HiCapDR by a new NAC252/SuperCapDR/NAP300DR system.
What a change!
Out of the box, the combo sounded amazing comparing to its predecessor. I have more of everything. It’s hard to translate with words those differences. The instruments are more real, the performers are there. You can hear them, their breathing, and their hands on the instruments. Cellos attacks are precise and clear. Piano... Well it sounds much more like a real piano, especially the end of the notes.
What a surprise, I didn’t realise that my speakers were able to produce so much music!
I suppose that the sound will improve a bit during the coming weeks.
For the moment I use NACA5 and HiLine, but a pair of Super Lumina speaker cables and Super Lumina DIN-DIN interconnect are on their way. I didn’t order everything at the same time because I wanted the system to settle down (or burn in) before the cables changing.
So what’s next now? Swap the nDAC with a ND555 ?! ;-)
Perhaps a Bentley?
For Goodness sake man, Enjoy what you have.

Congratulations on your new boxes, the good news is your system is going to get even better as the days go by.... certainly a good idea to let everything settle down before introducing the SL loom...
[@mention:1566878603988027] : That's exactly what I do, and will do. But I have to admit that it's quite enjoyable to rediscover the music through this new system.
[@mention:1566878603876139] : I'm more an ice axes guy. If I had a Bentley I'll probably swap it with a brand new Renault Kangoo 4x4 ;-)
[@mention:50422349809511500] : Thanks for the congrats! I hope you're right about the system getting even better. And I suppose the SL Loom will take the system even further.
Enjoy your new boxes I use the same and find it superb however it will take some considerable time to settle in. I was also using a High Line and Naca5 but found the S/L interconnect and speaker cables were a great improvement and well worth the money just give everything plenty of time to burn in the best is yet to come.

Do get the new generation with the Naim system though.
Enjoy your new system upgrade.
I remember some members here saying the Supernait2 was almost as good as 252/300.
Found it strange, but everybody listens different.
Do you feel the bass is easier or more dificult to control?
Did you adjust the speaker positioning or no need?
Regards
Rui
You go from an eight thousand dollar system to a thirty five thousand dollar system, and you're surprised, why?????????
I would be surprised if there wasn't a huge difference! Put in into perspective, and its not really shocking is it?
Badlands,
I never listened to SuperNait2. There is law of diminishing returns and there are folks here that claimed the Supernait2 was almost as good as 252-300.
As i have a 252 DR and planning to DR the 300 it is reassuring to "know" that 252-300 is still in another league.
Regards
Rui
Congratulations Tomser!!!
enjoy playing loads of music

SN2 as good as a 252-300
The law of diminishing returns is from 282/250 levels, not really from the SN2, unless one has pretty average speakers and sources.
Fraim?
Settle down and enjoy for a year till the new streamers come around

Buy speakers, maybe. ????

The DR 252 etc. was a big step up from the non DR which had a few doubters.
Enjoy a great system
Gary
The law of diminishing returns starts at the level above the one you’re at, whichever it is and moves up each time you upgrade, and if HH’s postings over the years are any guide it can also move down when you downgrade too but it always starts a step above your current system.

Sorry Rui, My post was meant for the OP. And yes there is a law of diminishing returns with Naim gear, I guess it's up to the individual buying the gear where that point is.
What's next is to discover your music collection and marvel at how much hitherto unnoticed information, magic and enjoyment is in there. The SL run in might be a bit lumpy. Give it a month. It will probably not take that long.

Hello Rui,
It's quite strange and hard to believe that anyone could objectively state that SuperNait2/HiCapDR is almost as good as 252DR/300DR. As I said previously, the former is more precise, more revealing, more clean, more bass (astonishingly well controlled), better imaging... well, everything seams to be properly controlled.
Don't get me wrong, the SuperNait2 is a wonderfully piece of analogue electronics. And I enjoyed it a lot!!!
Taste isn't something objective. So I can, of course, imagine that someone would prefer the SuperNait2. But, is it as "good" as the 252DR/300DR... not really.
After only 12-13 hours of usage, the sound is really great. I listen almost only to classical music. From renaissance to romantic periods. I've been told that this combo suites this kind of acoustic music. Well, it is quite true! The voices man, the voices! Cello, violin or piano solos are really more enjoyable. Schubert and Brahms trios are amazing. If you enjoy classical music, jazz or any well recorded acoustic music, then this combo is simply perfect.
Regarding speakers positioning and such, I did nothing at the moment, and the cables are a mess. I'll do the "fine tune" during the weekend (cables and positioning).
Cheers,
Tom

Thanks!
I have a pair of Jean-Marie Reynaud "Abscisse". It's a french brand. Fast and quite revealing speakers.
Btw, I update my profile info. I had forgot to mention my speakers.

I'm quite curious to hear the first ND555 listening tests.
A nice streamer could be an option to consider in the future

Well, considering Naim's recent track record (read Uniti launch), you will probably have enough time for your new system to settle in, including the SL wires...
Unpack it, connect it up, switch it on, and listen to it for a few months. Maybe buy some new music too.
I would suggest a fully rebuilt Nait2 when you’re ready to go to the next level.
