Low-Frequency Supplement to LS3/5a Loudspeakers

Forum

Several months ago I located a website by accident run by either an ex KEF or B&W engineer who makes a low-frequency extender loudspeaker for LS3/5a. From memory, this one is a bit different than the bandpass enclosures on offer by others. Problem is I did not bookmark the page, nor can I remember the name of his company. Searching online has come up empty.

Might someone know of this manufacturer? Many thanks.

Try Falcon Acoustics or Stirling Broadcast.

I think Falcon still offer a Rogers AB1 style LS3/5a subwoofer kit.

Alternatively, it appears that some (such as Tim De Paravicini, so I'm informed) are getting good results from running doubled up pairs of LS3/5as.

Yup it was Mr Kessler who liked the stacked Falcon Acoustics LS3/5a's that Tim Paravicini had at the Tokyo show .... he repeated it at home and was again staggered.............. it would be great if someone on this forum could test this setup on Naim equipment. Just a thought - ha you could try a Kan Mk 1 on top of an LS35A....... that would be interesting.........

Graham Audio now do a sub for LS3/5 and LS3/5a.

The designer is Derek Hughes.

Guys,

Tx for the updates. All mfrs listed do have supplemental subs for LS35/A, but this is not the manufacturer I saw.

Your input is appreciated.

Hmm - the only one I can think of but it's not specifically for the 3/5A is Kralk Audio.

Are we talking the stand type extender or a separate sub unit ?

Forgive me AG, if I say I believe this is a flawed project for a speaker originally deemed suitable for outside broadcast vans. I base this on having once visited BBC studios in Shepherd's Bush, London, and heard them in the centre of a very well-damped room of approx 30m2, and placed Im apart on stands at head height, firing straight ahead, with the producer sitting 1m away. Spell-binding replay.

I realise this is not the reply you are looking for. Also that most would not find such an arrangement domestically acceptable. But there you are. I wish you luck with it. And the very best sources into your SN.

I’m sure not what you came across, but if I was looking for a sub I’d seriously consider the Wilson Benesch Torus...

Rogers produced a subwoofer LSB1 for the Rogers LS35/A’s which integrated rather well with my Naim 32.5/250 at the time before moving on to SBLs. Although first produced in the 1980s, refurbished LSB1s still come up for sale occasionally.

Google Stirling Broadcast AB-2 Bass Extenders for LS3/5a.

That's what I'd call an extender, rather than a standalone sub.

Designed by Derek Hughes, who has worked for several manufacturers - probably not the guy you're thinking of, but could be.
