Uniti Atom + NAP100 , bi-amp possible?
Posted by: HelloTerry on 27 March 2018
I am interested to add power for my uniti Atom, would like to know if it possible to coupe with NAP100 and operate as bi-amp
connected speaker is Neat Elite SX , which supports bi wire
Thanks
Nothing much to be gained in biamping in this manner...it only really becomes worthwhile when mono blocks are in the equation.imho.
Fact is the Elite demand more solid amplication, guess a Nova will do, I used a 250 when I had them
Biamp/biwire sucks and will screw performance
[@mention:71258267967640633]: this is my current set up to drive a pair of PM1s and it works just fine and great. All you need is a good cable to connect the NAP100 to the Atom (I use some QED for that). Works perfectly for me.
Umm.
Thanks for great comment for yours guy.
I know Nova would be a good choice but I can’t afford that. So thinking of relative small upgrade.
As i’m In Hong Kong , no dealer loaning service here. So asking Naim’s user here would be a better chance to get a answer.
seems comment includes both side opinion.
what if I top up Atom with NAP150 or even higher grade ?
Besides, Bouda, in my idea, I will connect Atom to high frequency and NAP100 to low frequency of the speaker. Do you have same connection ?
Having had a Qute2 and NAP100 in the past, I think that it may not be the best option with Atom and these speakers. NAP100 is slightly curtailed and softer at both frequency extremes, so if you do want to biamp, for the bass I would select an amp further up the line which goes lower with more authority/control if you want to get the best from your speakers.
In my experience bi-amping/bi-wiring is very speaker dependent (I use it with very positive results on my Quad speakers but found no benefit with my old PMC's), so it would be good to get some input from Neat Elite owners who have tried both ways. It could be something to try with a secondhand amp so that if it doesn't work out you can move it on with minimal loss. Even then, you would want to compare bi-amping against using Atom as a preamp only, with the better power amp running the speakers.
I remember for Unitiqute, there was a sonic benefit to switching off the speaker outputs entirely and running preamp mode vs bi-amp, but I'm not sure whether this option exists with Atom or would provide the same benefits (and in any case user conclusions were mixed on this Qute setup).
I'm afraid this is a typical scenario, people are rushing out to get the new Uniti streaming boxes from Naim without really thinking will it match my other kit or can I afford further changes afterwards.
I had both a Nap 100 and a Nap 150 on my Qute and preferred Nap 100, a better amp imo, this was with other speakers though
If possible I would change Neat speakers instead, perhaps to some Motives, these would be a better Atom match (perhaps for same amount cash)
I second Perol's comment regarding the NAP 100 abilities: very understated devilish little amp: It drove every speakers with bags of low-end and headroom to spare quite easily (with one exception though : Leema Xero, these required an amp with some hair on the chest !!). I"ve used it with a Qute2 => DAC V1 along with a pair of LS50, with great reasults, the DAC being used as both aN outboard preamp and...well a DAC.
The NAP 100 is a very capable amp, provided you don't ask it to drive an unstable load in a concert hall. My room is 25 square meters and it worked for me.
In my set-up he Atom feeds the highs while the NAP100 is dedicated to low frequencies.
However I'm not convinced pairing an Atom with another amp higher in the range would make sense financially speaking: in that case, better go a Nova and keep your speakers. From a budget perspective, I think Atom + NAP100 works, but not Atom + another Amp that will likely the same price or even more, which to me does not make any sense.
And as advised Perol, I'd rather change the speakers if you just purchased the Atom don't want to part with it.
