NAC552 adds Vinyl experience to everything !

Posted by: rjstaines on 28 March 2018

My NAC552 adds the occasional 'pop' - it's just like listening to vinyl.

It all started a while back right after a DR upgrade;  the pops would occur very occasionally and were almost un-noticable, but recently I've noticed they are becomming more frequent... about 2 or 3 an hour.  They only appear in the left channel, never in the right.  They don't seem to be volume dependant (they sound the same velume level whatever the volume setting on the 552, I think! )

You may ask how come I've noticed the recent increase... I've been laid low since the end of January with some (so far undiagnosed) affliction that causes abdominal pain - the kind where you want to curl up in a quiet place and try to get comfortable (or die)... and guess where the quiet, comfortable place is in our house... the lounge where the audio gear is.

The other contributing factor is the arrival of the ATC SCM 100 active speakers and the departure of the NAP500, so the power amp, which I had previously suspected, is now out of the loop, leaving just the pre-amp.

So, has anyone else experienced this unwanted 'vinyl effect' - 'pops from the pre' ?

Pops via headphones also?

Roger,  sorry to hear that you are unwell, hope things get sorted soon.

I too have been dealing with a “pop”, it seems just like yours, but affecting both channels (I think).  After a lot of investigation, taking different components in/out, I am pretty sure it is the SupercapDR/SNAXO. (If you recall I have a 552 in an active set-up, so there are a lot of combinations).

We plan to swap the Supercap in order to be absolutely sure.

Not sure what component is failing.  On the positive side, I have noticed any impact on the sound quality.

Best,

Gavin

Roger, sorry to hear you aren't feeling good. Are you sure it's not something else that is causing the issue and is being "picked up" by the NAC552?  A Faulty thermostat or fridge maybe?  Or perhaps something else entirely?

For example, I have had an issue of a kind if low level rustling noise on one channel of my Superline.  Hard to pick out at first, and initially I thought it might the a bad cap or something - but of so low a level that i thought no point in fixing just yet.  However, I did some tests and it appears it may be related to my iPhone being in the vicinity.  If I keep my iPhone well away from the system then no problem.  But if the iPhone gets in the vicinity of the system then sometimes I get the "rustling cap" noise.

Roger - most important get fit soon.

Ditto what Richard said my system used to pop when the boiler kicked in or hob was ignited.  Dedicated radial spur fixed it.

Best regards,

Lindsay

Roger - one other thing to add to the all the excellent advice already mentioned.

You seem to have a lot of kit plugged into the 552. You don't mention if the popping occurs with all sources or just specific ones. If it's all sources, then one thing that might be worth trying is removing some of the sources from the 552 just to simplify things and see if the problem goes away. If it does, then start to plug the other sources back in until it comes back and then troubleshoot from there.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Cheers

James

PS - If you have the 552 connected via the RC5 connector for system automation, try unplugging this first...

Roger - I hope you get better. I agree the occasional pop from the 552 is most likely a spike on the mains from a switch with a suppressor that has gone faulty and open circuit - such as from a thermostat in a fridge or heating system.

Could the pain be a hernia from shifting those big speakers ?

When I had pops I noticed it corresponded with those times the heating or water went on. Turned out to be a dodgy timer.

In my case, it was a fridge cycling on and off.

My Nac552 starts beeping when a XBOX One is close by. Not so much beeping as sort of making a fax kind of whistling sound. Like it's picking up a radio station...

Thanks for all your comments gents. You've given me a few things to investigate that I hadn't thought of before.   And thanks for your good wishes health wise.

Right now it's Thursday evening. I've had nil by mouth, except water, since an early breakfast - I'm half way through the preparation for tomorrow having a camera placed in places Alhazen (the inventor of the camera obscura) never dreamed of having his invention placed.  Happy days

Roger,

Hope it goes smoothly .....and, they determine what is going on.

Wish you well Roger.

I had that unfortunate experience quite surreal, waiting around for an hour or so watching pretty nurses running around. Then they are the darlings helping you through this experience........they were just professional and very human.

I hope it goes better than you expect, it did for me.

Wish you well. I hope the advises before have given you enough clues.

If I miss it, I'll be really ill

I was watching Paul McGowan youtube feed (PS Audio) and he recounted  an interesting discussion with Arnie Nudell .... he demoed a really good preamp in a revealing system against no pre amp and direct ..... the preamp won hands down ..... I think the 552 does something similar....

Roger and Willy, I hope you both get better soon.

I had pops due to a Sky Q box being fitted. It turned out that it uses Ethernet by mains. Turning of the small Q units cured the problem. Might be another possible cause for consideration?

As an aside Sky Q only uses its internal powerline adapters via the mains if you set it up that way... always set up or have set up using Ethernet or if you need to Wifi... but never it’s internal powerline adapters if you value your Naim audio (and other audio and radio)... we use Ethernet here and the Sky Q mini boxes work a dream without any noise on the mains with whines, fuzz, hiss, clicks and pops on the Naim. I shudder to think how it would mangle my 552. Keep your mains clean... KYMC

Thanks Simon, good to know. I just leave the mini box off as it is barely used. Pops were mainly via the Stageline which was recently replaced with a Urika that seems to reject noise much better.

Thanks again,

Stu.

I’ve had my 552 for 5 months now, it’s an amazing pre-amp, adds a totally different level of detail and refinement over the 52

So; my question is, why would you listen to anything other than vinyl with a 552

Hi Roger!

My Marantz amp had a similar symptom. I bought it during winter and placed it in relatively tight space in my tv-stand. All was well until spring came and room temperature got higher. Amp suffered from the increased heat and was noticeably warmer than before. I moved the amp to enable maximum ventilation around it and popping was gone.

Allthough different brand and pricerange.

Could this popping have something to do with amp overheating?
