Naim App and the network
Posted by: Wairds on 30 March 2018
My network is configured with a BT Home Hub upstairs and an Edimax extender downstairs. The two connected by Powerline.
Connected to the Edimax by wire is my NAS and Unitilite. Connected upstairs via wifi is my Muso QB. From an audio point of view everything is fine. The SSID for the Home Hub and the extender is the same. I have noticed on the Unitilite display that it lists the same SSID twice?
My problem arises when trying to access the Unitilite from upstairs using the Naim app. It can’t seem to find it.
Why might this be happening and can I rectify it?
Any assistance would be gratefully received!
When you say “power line” do you mean an Ethernet over mains device?
Such devices are considered the work of the devil in networking - Naim strongly discourage their use as they are so problematic.
Have you been in contact with Naim support?
Can your Edimax Extender be configured as either an extender or as a wireless access point (WAP) ? If so, which way have you configured it to work? It looks like you have it configured as a WAP rather than an extender.
I have a BT HH5 downstairs and have paired a Netgear extender to it and it is fitted upstairs without the need for any powerline/EoM required and enables me to connect my UQ2 by ethernet cable. Have you tried this arrangement?
Regarding the network address issue. My Extender does have a different local IP address to that of my HH5 device. If you are comfortable logging into the advanced settings of your HH you can access the DHCP table. I'd suggest first restarting the extender which will renew its lease and ensure that it appears in the DHCP table. Once in the table, find the device and manually change its IP address. If your DHCP address range runs from xxx.xxx.x.64 to xxx.xxx.x.254 then give it an address lower than 64 (avoiding the IP address of any other device on your network) and click on "Yes" to "Always use this IP address".
Your Extender should then be listed under the Wireless Connections section of the Home Network - Devices table of your BT HomeHub together with the Unitilite connected to it with its own network ip address.
By way of further explanation, a Wireless Access Point is usually connected to the router via an ethernet cable (or in your case over the mains using the powerlines) in order to provide wi-fi coverage to a remote location. In this case the WAP’s ethernet port would normally be used to facilitate connection to the router/HomeHub rather can connecting to your unitilite which should then be set up to connect wirelessly.
When used as an Extender it connects to the HomeHub via wi-fi to enable connection of your Unitilite via an ethernet cable.
I may be wrong but personally I'd have thought the wifi extender should have a different SSID otherwise you've got 2 similarly named but different wifi signals potentially on different channels and likely with different LAN IP addresses which would be confusing in an app without a way to discriminate one wifi from the other - try a different SSID on extender and restart router and all devices, though clearly some may then see both networks, some only one where the signal is worse.
First of all, may I thank you all for taking the effort to respond. It is greatly appreciated for one who is ignorant of all things to do with a network!
Richard, I am aware of the disdain with which powerline adapters are regarded through earlier conversations on the forum. From an audio aspect they do work for me and from the point of view "if its not broke don't fix it" I will continue to use them. But thank you for your response.
SjBabbey, Thank you for your detailed response and I am going to try what you suggest. (Yes the Edimax is configured as a WAP) .I will report back.
Alley Cat, I was advised to do this by the vendor (since out of business) who sold me the Muso to make it transparent as to the network it was on. This is why I don't understand why it doesn't work.
Thanks once again.
You're welcome, Wairds. If you do reconfigure the Edimax as an Extender, then you will be able to remove the powerlines since it will be connecting to your HomeHub by wi-fi.
I ended up renaming my extension wi-fi access points so that I knew precisely which point I was connected to.
So I now have SSID, SSID-Study and SSID-Bed so I can always tell if I'm actually on the strongest signal access point.
An example being that in my kitchen, I can still connect to the study access point but it's not as strong signal as the sitting room access point. A bit flaky.
My kitchen QB would sometimes drop onto the "wrong" access point, such as following a power cut.
Now I can be sure which access point I'm connected to but also, and importantly (in relation to your issue), if my iPhone is still connected to my distant "SSID-study" wifi when I'm in the kitchen, it can fail to operate the Muso QB until I connect to the stronger "SSID" access point.
It's worth trying if only to rule out a weak signal.
Waids,
i have had similar issues with this, and multi room not working. With naim support help I traced the problem to wireless extender. If I connected everything to the HH it all worked seamlessly. If devices were connected to the extender there were discovery and multi room issues.
There are a number of threads on this forum related to this subject.
Sjbabbey,
I configured it as per your suggestion and I am pleased to report it seems to be working the way I want. I can now access the Unitilite from upstairs. I didn’t amend the IP address.
Strangely though I cannot see the range extender mentioned on the Home Hub?
Thanks once again.

Glad to hear that your network is working OK. Interestingly. my own Extender doesn't show up in the list of connected devices on the BT HH5 "Home" page and shows as "Not connected" although it does appear in the DHCP table and the UQ2 connected to it is showing as connected (and is working OK this morning).
