Naim app - music on core missing

Posted by: Chris G on 01 April 2018

I've been using Core to play a range of music files, but through editing some of the files, decided to use the app facility to "rebuild music database", to apply some of the naming changes I'd created.  All was playing OK beforehand, but after applying this setting, only some of the music files have reappeared via the app to play.  The remaining files are still on the Core as I can see them all via the network and file explorer on my pc.  I have tried re-booting the Core, rebooting the server (BT Hub 6), uninstalling and then reinstalling the app on both my iphone and ipad, still with no success.  Anyone else had this problem and is there an easy solution please?  I am using the Core with Ethernet cabling via a netgear switch.

When you edited the files, how did you do that? I hope the answer is one of 1) with the Naim app to modify metadata on Core rips or 2) with a PC/Mac to alter metadata etc in the downloads folder.

But if you have used your PC to edit Core rips in the Music/MQ folder then I am afraid that you have demonstrated that Naim is right and doing that does indeed break the indexing, in which case you will probably need to rip the missing CDs again from scratch.

Hi David, I used option 2.  I used Jaikoz on my pc, working directly on the files in music downloads in the Core, via my wired network.  Edits I had made to the metadata (mainly relating to individual track order) worked OK on the Core, it was just that some of the disc names weren't displaying correctly.  I thought a rebuilding of the music database would solve that issue.

I suspect that Jaikoz (which I don't know at all) doesn't edit metadata in a way that the Core recognises. But there are others members here who can suggest what other editing software to use. Normally if you do edit metadata innthe downloads folder, the Core picks it up on its own within a few minutes, so the fact that it didn't is probably significant.

It may be the case as you suggest, but it's strange that many of the missing files haven't been edited at all.  I made some changes to incorrect track order showing on the Core, in the way I describe, and they took effect without any problem.

Thanks again David

You might want to call Naim support to discuss this after Easter because I have a vague memory that someone else on the Forum a while back had a similar issue about Core music not showing up in the app and I think I remember that a factory reset of the Core fixed that.

If you want to try a factory reset, you do it turning the Core off completely (not just in standby, so unplug it from the mains), then you hold the standby button in and plug it back into the mains. Keep holding the standby button in until the light by the front panel USB socket flashes, then you can let go the standby button and let it finish starting up. You will need to set it up again, e.g. agree with its suggestion (in the app) that it uses the Music Store that it has found as the Music Store and obviously don't agree to it formatting it.

Hi David and Chris, it was me that had a similar problem. Factory reset might cure it. In my case I also had a backup (carried out by the Naim app, this is important, don't use any other backup method otherwise you can only put the backup in the Downloads folder if things go wrong with the Core). I carried out a full restore. As with all things computer, carry out regular backups, especially before carrying out any changes. During backup procedures you can still play your music collection. As David said, music ripped to Core will always be placed in the Music folder, don't try to edit anything in here via a computer. It's imperative you only use the Naim app. Files in the Downloads folder can be edited through a computer, also that's where you'd drop any music you've downloaded via Internet or other means. Rich

Hi Rich, thank you for your reply.  I'm glad to hear from someone else with the problem.  I have since tried a factory reset, but there was no change.  When you did the back up with the Naim app, did it copy all your music over, or just the ones visible via the app?  There are only a handful of CDs ripped, most of my music is downloads, which of course, I have saved elsewhere, twice.

Thanks again, regards, Chris

I see Rich is offline at the moment but anyway I'm pretty sure the answer is that the backup only backs up rips and you have to back up downloads another way. I recall Trevor Wilson explainimg in the Forum that this inconvenience was deliberately carried forward from US and HDX to Core because it was a well-known Naim architectural approach.

Hi Chris, when I used the App for making a backup it copied all files that were on the Core including those in the Downloads folder. I've just double checked this in my Qnap NAS that I use for Core back up, Music and Downloads are there fully populated.  It's worth noting, and I've not seen this mentioned in Naim literature or on the forum that when you make a second back up in the same folder, if there is a change, for instance you deleted some recordings so your second back up is smaller, your old larger backup will be placed in a recycle folder that you can access via the NAS or whatever and drag out to the main folder for use as a primary backup and then use the App to repopulate the Core. When I repopulated my Core using the App I had no issues regarding Music or Downloads restoring correctly. Rich

Ah well there you go. Perhaps Naim listened when, soon after launch, a bunch of us said here on the Forum that Core backup should include both Music & Downloads folders regardless of what happened with earlier servers.

Actually  I can see Trevor's remark was about editing downloads not backing up downloads, so it's my faulty memory. Sorry.

Hi Chris, have a look at the following topic that I started when I had problems with the folders.  .... < https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...pen-downloads-folder >   it's all interesting, but do read my last post in that thread. Rich

Thanks Rich for your further information, which makes interesting reading.  I was in contact with Naim this morning and they suggested leaving the Core powered for a long time and see if the music library re-populated.  I did this at 9.00 am this morning, left it alone all day, then came back to it at 6.00 pm and the complete music library now seems visible.  It seems it was just a case of a very long wait.  One for experience, I guess.
