About to give up with streaming

I started a post a few days ago about my frustrations around sorting my library.  Basically I want David Bowie to appear under B but as David Bowie, exactly the way I used to find his records and CDs in HMV or the way he would be listed in my address book - not complicated, demanding or unusual.  I discovered that I can use MusicBrainz Picard to add a new tag called 'Album Artist Sort' to achieve this for most (but not all) albums (no obvious pattern) but it deletes the Album Name for FLAC but not MP3 files!  I can add the Album Name back but when I click on the Album on the Naim app I don't get a list of the tracks.  Mp3tag allows me to edit 'Album Artist Sort' for a small proportion (again, no discernable pattern) of albums without any obvious issue.

Much more concerning, about a quarter of my library appears to have randomly corrupted itself.  These are not the albums I've been editing metadata on.  For example if I look up Mary Margaret O'Hara I can see the correct album artwork for her album Miss America but when I click on it it's empty.  If I look up Miss America under Album it's got a tracklisting from a Muse album!  I have over 21000 tracks, I've spent a longtime getting my library reasonably organised and now this absolute mess.  I have a recentish backup but not sure how to restore (will speak to my dealer tomorrow) and it's entirely possible it's the corrupt version which is backed up.  I feel like chucking the streamer in the bin.  Totally random and impossible to make any sense of.

CDs ripped from dBpoweramp but music acquired from various sources, Asset UpnP, had been using Mp3tag exclusively for editing until Picard over the last few days.

Very grateful for any advice.

We retired people just can’t keep up. That said, I’ve no idea what a upnp cache is, I just know it’s a good idea to clear it.

Update - rebooting the NAS seems to have sorted the apparent corruption I described earlier which rescanning didn't seem to fix......

Many changes to settings on a NAS or other computer require a reboot before they take effect. So I’d say there is every chance that you had already done the right thing, but you just couldn’t see it until you rebooted.

Simple. Store the files on your NAS as you would like them displayed. Then use Asset UPnP Folder view. Done

Sometimes I just feel so silly and wonder how could I be so dumb!

I just threw ‘Bowie’ into Roon, and aside from retrieving all (Bowie, David/ David Bowie etc. Albums), it told me that Herman’s Hermits were first to release ‘Oh you pretty things’ , and offered to play it next. Why waste time on filing, when Roon can do it for you. Life’s too short!!

Now try a Tidal integration and you can go a lot deeper for less than 1.5 purchased cds a month. I just added some of the automatic “collections’ to begin with, and then check new music for things I like, and the ones I do I “add to library.” And a shuffle that works - you can do your whole collection, by genre, artist, etc. I haven’t quite sussex the difference between shuffle and radio yet. Radio more automatic I guess. I have about 50,000 tracks in my collection, 640gb of that flac 5’s on local hard drive (28,000 or so approx). The rest Tidal. Of course if Tidal goes bust, or I become seriously poor, then it all goes away. I bought a lifetime Roon; I figure if it goes bust I’m pretty sure it wiould go community based, like LMS, or bought by a bigger entity. But boy, talk about putting some excitement back into streaming again without mucking about with folders. It’s not perfect, nothing is. But they seem to listen on their forum. Good things coming most likely.

I’m upsampling on my V1 to DSD 128 with a precise minimum filter in the living room, and up to 24/96 with minimum soft in the office, and both sound amazing. The little NUC 7i5 running ROCK I got handles it handily. I use an inexpensive but hefty Chinese LPS with it.

Enjoy!
