New firmware this week
Posted by: blythe on 03 April 2018
Just received an email from Naim:
We are pleased to announce that the Mu-so & Mu-so Qb Multiroom compatibility firmware update v.1.6 will be available to download this week.
This new update will enable you to now seamlessly play music between your Mu-so all-in-one system and other Naim streaming products, as well as fix some known bugs.
The Naim app will notify you when the update for your product becomes available.

Now my Rega TT can be listed to in my main room ;-)
Happiness filled - Thanks Naim for delivering this long awaited functionality.
Actually the other feature I've been waiting for is...CD Ripping on "all" new Uniti range (yes, even an ATOM) - this was touted as a feature before release, plug in a USB external CD drive and a USB HDD and RIP your CD collection (can't remember if it was meant just to rip to USB drive, network drive or both).
Seems to have been vaguely forgotten about despite me having seen the functionality on an early beta software release at a dealer.

Spoken to Naim tech support. The news is that the Mu-so updates are not due to be released until today or tomorrow - the updates are being staggered. So more patience needed. Naim ask for us to apply the updates as we see them - I was waiting so all available in case of interoperability problems but was assured there should be none.

Odd because my Qb is showing an update released yesterday, but only on my iPad as I said before. Weird.

That went ok then.
The step by step guide in Naim Streaming Products_Firmware Update Guide (PC) EN.pdf which is in the 4.4 update download should really be in with this update. Maybe it was and I missed it, but the only PDF that I found in this d/l was a bland information sheet Multiroom-compatibility-firmware-update-release-note-v.3_Classic-Streamers.pdf with no real useful detail. The video embedded in the email was worth a watch too, if only to show that it is quite straightforward.
I know my way round a PC but have had too many experiences where what should be a simple process turns out not to be, so it's generally worth reviewing all the information before starting. The video & PDF were enough, but without this forum pointing me to the USB driver I wouldn't have started.
Rightly or wrongly Naim get a lot of flak for their s/w, but simple things like including the USB & RS232 driver links with this release instead of having to go and find them would be beneficial. So would terminology - my laptop is fully patched and up to date, why do I need a new USB driver? Ah - it's not a USB driver, it's a driver for the unit. So why not call it that? It's things like that stop it being a seamless easy process. I can see why people might prefer to leave it, or wait till they can get to a dealer to have it done there.
I’ve just updated to Firmware 4.6 on my UQ2. Used the silicone Labs VCP USB driver as included in the last (4.4) Firmware PDF from Naim’s last firmware release on their Updates support page (https://www.naimaudio.com/updates). Then went through the process on my Mac Mini as outlined in the short video. The only slight hiccup - Mac High Sierra initially blocked the installation of the USB drive software, easily remedied in System Preferences.
All done and working again in less then 30 minutes.
I have updated my Nova to v 2.6 this morning. The music plays but I now get 2 large quavers instead of album art when streaming from Unitiserve and 2 small quavers on the 'now playing screen'. I've power cycled to no avail.
Radio station logos are shown and album art is there when streaming from Spotify. Any suggestions?

Just 30 seconds for my Nova. Would be nice to leave the clock showing but not a big deal.

Blast - mine had shown for an hour or so - I changed radio stations and now it's back to switching back to the station picture rather than staying on the time. Must have been a glitch that made it stick on the time
Like you I don't really care about the time showing - I have watches and clocks that will tell me the time.

Ok, so 17 or 18 hours after the Atom and Qb update was available my Mu-so update has just appeared and now applied.
One thing I have noticed is that the download marker did not disappear after the update has been applied until the Naim App was restarted

I thought that was one of the things listed as fixed in this update.
I have a NAS, not Unitiserve, but have seen this.
My Nova does/used to do this occasionally - it usually corrects itself when the next track begins (but only if it moves from one track to the next itself - not if I press "next" to go there).
When it hasn't, usually selecting and playing another album has fixed it.

I just successfully updated the firmware on my legacy streamers. One thing I ran into that I had forgotten is that you need to use a USB to USB-C lead that includes the data connections and leads supplied with, for example, mobile phones to allow charging from a USB socket, mostly don't have all the pins connected.
So five minutes of wondering why my PC couldn't communicate with the first streamer for updating and then the problem was solved when I changed the USB lead for a proper one.

Yes - that is what I just said?
So you did. So we all agree. Which is good.

I think it’s a USB to mini-B. Maybe mini-B is C.
HH I defer to your USB knowledge! It's a big one to a small one anyway!
And USB C is indeed something else entirely.

Yes its a USB A to Mini-USB B. I have about 10 laying around as they are freebee incl with Canon camera's. Problem is all are only 1m long & as good as a chocolate fireguard for the Naim. I use a 5m length that goes from NDX to a nice leather recliner.

That's good news that I don't need a laptop...
I don't have one ...but do have a leather recliner!!

This is definitely superior to the approach I took this afternoon with my 272 which was to avoid moving it by reaching down the back of the stack to plug in the USB lead and hover with my laptop in my hands for the five minutes or so it took to do the update.

Updated my Mu-so and Mu-so qb today and also the Naim app. All are showing latest firmware and version. No problems experienced
The email from Naim seemed a little vague but I got all excited that a multi room update that required Naim to email me would actually be a major step forward in being able to play a single source of music in two locations.......alas that has not been the case. I can’t actually see one bit of difference. Still not able to multi room from the digital source, Bluetooth or AirPlay. (Appreciate that AirPlay may be licence locked) but I can’t even send the sound from the tv mu-so through to the kitchen qb
Could someone tell me if I’m wrong, but as it is I’m really going to have to give up on this brand and put it down to experience. I appreciate that Naim may have many high end products that are of exceptional quality however the “multi room” Mu-so and qb certainly don’t deliver the true multi room experience of its competitors.
If I had a pound for every time my app said no rooms found I might have saved up enough to replace the system by now! ????

The Multiroom updates are to enable the new Uniti range (Atom etc) to act as Multiroom master to the "legacy" systems and Mu-sos. Only the new Uniti range supports Multiroom from the digital and analogue inputs.
And if anyone is hoping to Multiroom from an Atom say, to a Mu-so to listen to TV sound remotely - the sound will be in sync but not with the video given the time lag introduced by Multiroom.

Paul,
the symptoms you describe, no rooms found and not being able to multi room may be network related. I have had similar issues in the past There are a number of threads on this forum related to this topic, I also had a discussion with naim support on this topic and diagnosed the issue.
It is worth investigating further, as there may be a simple solution.

Puzzled about this. So, to accomplish ripping via the Atom, is the USB external CD connected to the front USB port, and the USB HDD connected to the one on the rear, or vice-versa?

With all due respect Paul, the multi-room does work with Muso and Muso QB.
It is not designed to work with "all" sources but uPnP should be fine - I can't recall precisely which sources can be multi-roomed off hand.
I use a couple of QB's in one of my systems with a SuperUniti and the only time I've ever had issues with finding rooms, multi-room etc. was when I had my old generic router or, when I had my additional wifi access points confusingly named (confusing for the devices trying to connect).
On one other occasion, "someone" had moved the cordless telephone base station to the "other side of the desk" right next to my Apple Airport Extreme. The two interfered with each other and I lost connections all over the place. "Energy saving" light bulbs can have a similar effect.
Updated my Star! Sounds great And of course now I’m waiting for the software to break in !!!

Thanks Roger. That’s disappointing that the Mu-so’s won’t ever have full multi room without a Uniti
