New firmware this week
Posted by: blythe on 03 April 2018
Just received an email from Naim:
We are pleased to announce that the Mu-so & Mu-so Qb Multiroom compatibility firmware update v.1.6 will be available to download this week.
This new update will enable you to now seamlessly play music between your Mu-so all-in-one system and other Naim streaming products, as well as fix some known bugs.
The Naim app will notify you when the update for your product becomes available.
Feeling brave, I thought I'd have a go at updating my NDS, but have failed at the first step. I deleted the V4.4 installation software and installed the new Streamer Updater software to my PC. Then I clicked on 'Finish' (with the 'Launch Streamer Updater' box checked and got a box entitled 'Setup'which says:
Unable to execute file:
C:\Program Files\Naim\Streamer Updater\UnitiUpgrader.exe
CreateProcess failed; code 740.
The requested operation requires elevation.
Can anyone offer any advice? Please.

The email from Naim seemed a little vague but I got all excited that a multi room update that required Naim to email me would actually be a major step forward in being able to play a single source of music in two locations.......alas that has not been the case. I can’t actually see one bit of difference. Still not able to multi room from the digital source, Bluetooth or AirPlay. (Appreciate that AirPlay may be licence locked) but I can’t even send the sound from the tv mu-so through to the kitchen qb
Could someone tell me if I’m wrong, but as it is I’m really going to have to give up on this brand and put it down to experience. I appreciate that Naim may have many high end products that are of exceptional quality however the “multi room” Mu-so and qb certainly don’t deliver the true multi room experience of its competitors.
If I had a pound for every time my app said no rooms found I might have saved up enough to replace the system by now! ????
With all due respect Paul, the multi-room does work with Muso and Muso QB.
It is not designed to work with "all" sources but uPnP should be fine - I can't recall precisely which sources can be multi-roomed off hand.
I use a couple of QB's in one of my systems with a SuperUniti and the only time I've ever had issues with finding rooms, multi-room etc. was when I had my old generic router or, when I had my additional wifi access points confusingly named (confusing for the devices trying to connect).
On one other occasion, "someone" had moved the cordless telephone base station to the "other side of the desk" right next to my Apple Airport Extreme. The two interfered with each other and I lost connections all over the place. "Energy saving" light bulbs can have a similar effect.
Thanks Blythe. The multi room functionality that does exist works well. Upnp radio and usb but not inputs I use as I mentioned above.
Regarding the network issues and the threads- I’ve probably started quite a few of them! I had a lengthy communication with Naim support also and changed everything. It’s just never reliable. I’ve gone to a separate modem as recommended by naim and there are still issues. I’ve lost the will to live on that one now
Oh, actually, I just closed the box and relaunched it from the desktop icon and it seems to have arrived at the next step.
I'll do the power setting thing and carry on and see what transpires.

Radio station logos are shown and album art is there when streaming from Spotify. Any suggestions please?
I thought that was one of the things listed as fixed in this update.
I have a NAS, not Unitiserve, but have seen this.
My Nova does/used to do this occasionally - it usually corrects itself when the next track begins (but only if it moves from one track to the next itself - not if I press "next" to go there).
When it hasn't, usually selecting and playing another album has fixed it.
Thanks Tallguy that's what mine did too, but not since the update.
Yes Clive keep the faith. It will work and we are here to help if needs be...

Now my Rega TT can be listed to in my main room ;-)
Happiness filled - Thanks Naim for delivering this long awaited functionality.
Actually the other feature I've been waiting for is...CD Ripping on "all" new Uniti range (yes, even an ATOM) - this was touted as a feature before release, plug in a USB external CD drive and a USB HDD and RIP your CD collection (can't remember if it was meant just to rip to USB drive, network drive or both).
Seems to have been vaguely forgotten about despite me having seen the functionality on an early beta software release at a dealer.
Puzzled about this. So, to accomplish ripping via the Atom, is the USB external CD connected to the front USB port, and the USB HDD connected to the one on the rear, or vice-versa?
As I understand it, the ripping feature was mentioned in a video well before launch by an engineer, and I believe a beta version was seen early. It was never launched and I have seen nothing to say it's on a roadmap, so the answer is it isn't there.
After complaining about the faff I thought I'd give it a go on my NDS. I discovered an old laptop at the back of a cupboard which still works so that was a start. Next a USB cable search and found one attached to a SIM card reader so on a roll.
Read this thread and saw need to download USB drivers from update 4.4 on the Naim website (why didn't Naim flag this?) then downloading the software, took an age because of the slowness of the old laptop.
Eventually all set up, plugged into NDS and pressed go, followed instructions watched the percentages reach 100% and all done. Occupied most of the afternoon doing it but it was raining so something to do.
Can't say it sounds any better or worse than before. Search and album selection seems to be a lot faster so that's a bonus I suppose.
Phew! I did it! After the initial hiccup (see above) everything went swimmingly. It seemed not to do the DSP Bootloader step, but did all the other steps. Best of all - it still works. After one song (Madeleine Peyroux 'Dance Me To The End Of Love', which always sounds superb) I cannot really identify any difference in SQ yet, but let's see.
I think a "hit you in the face" improvement is suspicious, and might get tiring, but a growing realisation that it's sounding even more wonderful than usual is what you want.

Updated my Nova, Qb and app yesterday. Multi-room works as advertised and I can now listen to vinyl on the Qb as well as on the Nova (lovely). Only slight disappointment is the Qb didn't get a proper Roon endpoint. Hopefully something to look forward to. Process was straightforward with usual "I hope I don't brick it" anxiety.
Can't comment on the Nova sound quality as I changed the phono pre-amp at the same time. So far I've only listened to vinyl so it's not a fair comparison. Qb sounds the same.

Agree ++ David. Applied the new firmware to my SU2 this afternoon, and have been listening since! I see there's a parallel thread (4.6 update and upgrade sound quality ?) but to address your point, I have noticed that the presentation of the music seems to involve a lot more "air", and it seems much easier to pick out individual threads in the music - which I guess must contribute to what someone else here has described as being a more immersive sound. I'm not finding myself tempted to crank up the volume as much as before - it seems much more satisfying at lower volumes. So that augurs well for extended listening sessions... and good relationships with the neighbours!
Mike-B has said that revisiting SQ was an opportunity for the DSP element of this firmware release, but I have no idea how that works - is the SQ tweaked to a house sound in Salisbury, and the beta testers anoint it once audio nirvana is achieved? - or do the beta testers actively contribute to this "voicing" process? I guess we'll never know, but I'm pretty happy with the results. I spent the Easter weekend with relatives listening to a Nova into tasty B & W XT8's, and yet my SU2 into ProAc Tablette 2000's isn't leaving me short-changed...

Oh, sorry, I thought "Fixed: Album image will sometimes get stuck on-screen, or will fail to show image when track changes" could have been refering to this. Seems it wasn't. I'll keep an eye on mine - I've mostly had IR on since the update and only a couple of albums.
I have a Uniti2 and wonder if it's worth all the fuss of installing 4.6? I don't use multi room but do stream from my Innuos Zen. Probably subjective and often when given something and told it is better it is believed, but can anyone with a Uniti2 confirm that SQ is improved with this upgrade?
Installed 4.6 this morning on my NDX and got this error upon completion (PC shows upgrade was successful:
==============
Fault 61
Bridge Co init fail
===============
I rebootted the NDX and all seems fine though with the right version of fw and DSP reflected under settings.

Apparently so...
I've just attempted to update my Uniti Nova and it seemed to be going ok until the unit re-started and I then got "error code 138". Does anyone know what this means please?
Now the screen is blank, nothing happens when I press the power button and the Naim app still show "updating".
I've just tried to phone Naim, but the support centre is "very busy" - surprise surprise!
Thanks.
UnitiQute 2 and NAC-N 272 both updated flawlessly to V4.6, with the obvious exception of having to chase down the Mac USB driver in the V4.4 update.
All functionality appears present and correct, no errors and/or additional reboots/restarts required, or just appearing, during the process.
Have to agree with HH that the 272 sounds exceptional after the update, but then again it did so before .

Pleased to report that I was able to update both the Mu-So (over air) and ND5xs (via download), yesterday, without any issues whatsoever... great ????
Previously, I was a little concerned, since some members (UK) reported having updated their Mu-So and QB several days earlier ... so I was perplexed as to why Mu-So though it had the latest firmware (when it wasn’t available to me in NZ)
Either they were mistaken, or it took a little more time to reach the South Pacific ????
Regardless .... it’s all good now
Is anyone else as baffled as me as to why time was wasted releasing firmware 2.3.1 for the Atom/Nova/etc if there was a newer firmware being launched a fortnight later?

I got this exact same message after updating my UQ2. Rebooted UQ2 and all seems ok now except clock does not work and I cannot get it to set! Also updated NDS and Qb with no problems.

Re the UQ clock, two things to try. Firstly try restarting the UQ. (And make sure it can see the Internet, for example by using iradio.)
Secondly you could do a factory reset, which you do via the spanner or wrench key on the remote.

Unfortunately as I try to update my 272 I find that whilst I have the right bridge controller there’s no serial port option showing when I launch the updater.
I have the 2.4.2 usb drivers installed and they are not disabled (according to the system report), like Dave’s were in a earlier post, so I guess I am unlucky in the apparent lottery of naim firmware updates.
I’d definitely welcome any thoughts. I am currently updating my Mac OS and will try again to see if that makes a difference but so far, no joy.
What a nightmare. I don't bother updating my SU or UQ as it's too much faff but my QB desperately needed the update as it keeps switching itself on automatically, usually silently but at 05.00 today playing loud music...
And it simply won't do it. It failed several times so I phoned Naim who said to attach it via ethernet rather than WiFi but that made no difference. They then suggested uninstalling and reinstalling the app. That did lead to the software downloading. But then it got stuck at the reboot stage. I've tried that three times now (7 times in total).
The MuSo range is supposed to be the simple, lifestyle product and in that context this is an epic fail. GRRR!
I feel better for the rant but suggestions would be gratefully received....
I also installed 4.6 this morning on my unitiqute (had 4.4 previously installed) and upon doing a factory reset ended up with “ Fault 61 Bridge...” I turned it off and on again and it seemed to start up ok. Also seems to be connecting to network ok. First time I’ve had an issue doing a firmware update.
Unfortunately, restarting the UQ2 did not solve the clock problem. If I reset the factory defaults will I lose the radio presets?
