Which phono stage and cartridge?

Posted by: The Author on 05 April 2018

I have a 1977 Linn Sondek with Ittok LV2 and Troika cartridge.

Advice I need is this.

I've just bought the deck and I have no idea of the history of the cartridge so I have to assume, considering how long ago Linn stopped making them, that the Troika is worn out. It sounds fine and tracks fine, but...

Anyway, I've been doing a little research and the Dynavector 10X5 keeps coming up as a decent cartridge. I have a budget of £500 for the cart. So, is the Dynavector the way to go for my deck, or can anybody recommend anything else?

My amp is a Naim Nait XS-2.

I also need advice on a phono stage. I was looking at either the Naim Stageline or the Trichord Dino MK3.

As for my musical taste and ear, I like decent 80's stuff: Grace Jones, Steely Dan, Level 42 that sort of thing. Rock, Pop, Jazz, Blues.

I like a smooth warm sound quality, not into bright/harsh top end.

Any advice much appreciated. Again, budget is £500 for cart and £500 for phono stage.

I'd have the deck service and the Troika checked first.  If it is worn out then the 10x5 is a good cartridge (I'm on my second) although possibly not Troika level!

+ 1 for Sondek service which will include new bits to replace those that have perished or faded.

From what you say I think you would be happy with Goldring 1042 or DV 10x5 into a Stageline N.

Rega Ania and Rega Fono MC is also a sweet combo imo.

The single most important thing is the Linn dealer.

I'd definitely try to rescue the Troika if at all possible, it's a great cartridge! I guess a Linn replacement for the Troika would have to be the Krystal nowadays but it's not cheap. Not as romantic as the Troika but a lot faster, rhythmic  and more detailed than its illustrious predecessor.

A full service is a given or you'll be throwing your cash away!

There's nice comprehensive selection of Stagelines are available on that well known auction site at the moment.

Thanks for that, Geko.

You should try the Dynavector P75 phono stage. Especially with The DV cartridge. I thought my MK 3 P75 was far superior to the stageline.

Hi,

sounds like you bought a nice turntable. Given your preferences, I’d say keep the Troika, try a Stageline S and get a service for the LP 12. Expert stylus did a great job on my old Koetsu. In to rebuilding cartridges, they offer inspections as well.

I believe for Linn MC carts stageline K is the right choice.
