Uniticore as a CD player?
Posted by: MangoMonkey on 05 April 2018
Can the uniticore be used as a CD player (with digital out?). I've got a bunch of CDs that I don't want to rip. The unitiserv has that option..
No just ripping only

Really? Can the Unitiserve can be used as a CD player? I thought it had to rip the files, store them, then replay them.
Do the Unitiserve or Uiniticore do HDCD format like most Naim CDPs?
Unitiserve can work in a rip mode, CD playback mode, internet radio mode and of course act as a UPnP server.

Neither the Serve or Core have internal DACs so neither can decode HDCD. They can of course serve a ripped HDCD disc (the HDCD encoding remains intact) but decode would be down to the DAC downstream.
Alternatively you can rip an HDCD disc using a program on the computer such as Dbpoweramp, which will Decode and expand it to a 24bit file. You can then serve that file from either the Serve or Core to any DAC or streamer with 24bit capability.
Mango raises a good point. With the UnitiServe and indeed HDX if a friend brought over a CD for a listen you could just play it without ripping it and thereby pirating a copy.
Keep the CDS3 me thinks

Why don't you want to rip them?

Uniti Core can play what’s on the CD and send digital out, but must rip first.
Can confirm that Core can't play cd's, only record them. Can also say that play back when compared with Naim CD players is up there with the best. Rich

Why don't you want to rip them?
Classical box set of 111 CDs + 111 yrs of Deutsche grammaphone. Want to check CDs out to see if I like them - only want to rip if I actually do. I guess I can delete if I don't like, but still...

I realise the easiness when ripped but I just do the old fashioned cd spinning and will continue so.
