Unitistar : Synology NAS

Posted by: Tricky Dicky on 06 April 2018

The Scenario; a Unitistar connected via an Ethernet cable to a TC-link wi-fi extender. Upstairs a further Ethernet cable connects into a Synology DS218j NAS Drive. Configuration of the Synology, guided by an article on an earlier model, seem OK. The Naim app’s network settings see the NAS Drive. But I am unable to connect to ‘Drives’ when I attempt to Rip.

In which direction would you send a novice when faced with the above dilemma?

Thank you, and err.., Hello.

I do not think that you can rip straingth to the network share. I rip my cd's to the usb attached to the back of the Star and then I take the stick to the PC where I copy and paste music to the  mapped Synology 'Music' share so the music is then visible and can be playerd via Naim app (as long as you have upnp server installed and enabled on the Synology).

I don't know the Star, but the ripping engine is similar to the UnitiCore, which I do know. You need to have a Music Store (not Share) defined as the place where the Star stores its rips. If you then move them to your NAS then that is a Music Share. From what WOJ says (and I defer to his knowledge) the Star may already have the drive connected to a USB port defined as a Music Store. In setup you probably can change that, but you would need to go on and do it.

But anyway I would suggest looking at the support wizard on the Naim website and see if it says anything there and if not you could call Naim support. I'm sure they would be delighted to get a call that isn't about the recent firmware updates!

best

I do the same but I rip on the SD card.

WOJ, David & EMME,

Thank you for the replies. Here’s me thinking that you could rip directly to the ‘share’ without the need for an intermediary. Will purchase a new USB drive specifically for the task.

Thanks

If the purpose of the drive is purely temporary storage and transfer of rips from Star to NAS, any old USB memory stick will do. You will then need to run a UPnP server on your NAS.

Alternatively, keep your music files on a larger USB drive, and use the Star’s server.
