Network cables for extension

Posted by: Mattnbarns on 07 April 2018

I am about to get started with an extension and there will be a couple of network points included. Any advice on type and manufacturer of the ‘in the wall’ cables?  This will be for home use only which may or may not include audio.

I am not really interested in boutique style cables (I just don’t believe in them) but I am interested to hear about decent, well built cables.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

You might want to consider trunking, so that you can pull cables through it, and change them in future if needed.

I’ve had good quality cables recently from Cable Monkey, good service too. Blue Jeans seem pretty good, too.

Interesting. I hadn’t considered that. I’ll consult the builder.

thanks.

Blue jeans cables, they use Belden cable which is considered the best.

I have used cable monkey recently for external cat5e very impressed with service and price.

If installing in wall then standard Cat5e (or Cat6) cable from Excel would be my suggestion. Terminate each end to punch down wall plates or to a patch panel.

Yes, the trunking is a good idea, and ask your electrician to lay two runs of Cat5e per trunk. For future use two runs gives you either resilience and or aggregation for greater performance... especially if you are connecting between switches.
