Playlists not working after move to NAS
Posted by: Gavin B on 08 April 2018
I’ve recently moved my ripped files from a PC to a QNAP NAS. I’ve got a couple of playlists created using Playlist Creator, and they’re not working. The tracks ‘load’ when I select the playlist in the app but only get ‘Can’t Play. Track skipped’.
The playlists look good - the paths are relative and look right to me when I open the m3u file in Notepad.
Even a newly created test doesn’t work.
i’ve checked the Asset settings, and rescanned everything.
Any ideas on how I can trace what’s going on?
UPnP playlists don't use the track titles to identify the files to play, instead they use an ID value assigned by the media server.
You've changed the media server (or at least the instance of the media server), so the new one will have assigned new IDs to all your files. You'll need to rebuild the playlists to get the new IDs.
I’m not sure about. The m3u file does have file name and path info. There doesn’t seem to be anything else. Even a new playlist created since the move doesn’t work.
Open your playlists in your text editor program (e.g. notepad for windows). For playlists on QNAP the filepath should start with "/share/Multimedia/foldername etc." Also note that the forward slash "/" separator is used in QNAP directories (Linux) as opposed to Windows which uses the backslash "\".
In notepad you can use the find and replace/replace all (Ctrl + H) function to edit all the lines at once.
It might be an idea to edit a single playlist and see if that is then playable before editing the rest.
Thanks, SJ. The switch to a forward slash worked!! Playlist Creator actually has an option to use forward slashes as a default.
The next issue is getting the app to pick up the album cover for the tracks. I’ve got covers for albums etc. And playlists created within the app also pick up covers, just not the ‘external’ ones.
Glad I could help. I’m using Asset UPnP to serve my files/playlists. While the playlist view in the app just shows the default folder icon, the album artwork does show up for each of the individual tracks when you open the playlist and also appears in the now playing view.
Restarting the app or clearing its image cache might give it a nudge.
Are your playlists created within the app or using an external tool?
Restarting app and clearing the cache didn’t help
Hi Gavin,
My playlists are all m3u files stored on my QNAP NAS. I originally created my playlists using notepad and saved them as m3u files but now use Playlist Creator 3.6.2 which makes things a lot easier.
Did you clear the image cache as well as the UPnP cache?
What server software are you using on you using?
You may need to have your server rescan your library.
I've just checked a few of my own playlists. In some cases I've embedded the artwork in the metadata for the files but not all so this doesn't seem to be critical i.e. the artwork appears whether or not embedded as long as the folder.jpg file is contained in the album folder.
Mine’s a very similar set up - QNAP NAS, Asset, Playlist Creator
Ive just re-scanned but that doesn’t seem to have worked.
Gavin,
Can you actually now play your playlists?
I have a Sandy Denny playlist which was missing the track artwork and wouldn’t play until I checked the filepaths and realised I’d changed the final folder name (deleted the artist name from the name of each folder). After editing the m3u file the track artwork immediately appeared in the app’s playlist.
If you do have a folder.jpg file in each folder, then I can only suggest rechecking every string of the filepaths.
Yes, I can now play the playlists - the change to forward slash sorted that. I believe I've got all my folder.jpg files present, but I'll check and check again. Thanks
A bit of a guess but if you haven't already done it, try checking the "UpStream Artwork" box in the Asset config. page on your QNAP.
Thanks! Will try that out tonight.
(Although I suspect I must already have that selected as it works when browsing by album artist.)
No, no luck with that - it was already selected. I've posted a question on the Asset forum too - I'll see if that brings any answers.
Problem solved, thanks to Spoon on the Asset forum.
Relative paths don’t work - they have to be full path /share/Multimedia/Music/ABBA etc.
This means manually editing the .m3u file but it’s not too much trouble really.
