Update equipment or not

Posted by: José Cano Fernández on 08 April 2018

Hello everyone. I currently have a CDX, NAC 112 + Flatcap 2 and NAP 200, all bought second hand but in perfect condition. Although he has his years already sound very well and I am very happy. Do you think they need a revision or should I wait for them to give a problem? From Spain it is complicated and expensive to send it to the UK.

Nap 200 serial?

Re-cappimg should be done every 10 years, or so.

Right now I do not have access to see the serial number. Let's see if tomorrow I can. and if I do not re-cap what could happen? Would I just have to do it to the NAP 200? The rest of the components do not? I have a laser spare for the CDX.

The 200 is unregulated, it will degrade slower than the regulated amps. I have 2 200's, one serviced, one 10 yr's unserviced. There is an audible difference but not in a way that it has a priority for me to service. I reconsider when it turns 15.

It has been said before to you that the week link is your 112, which is pretty true. Why not consider a nac 72, that is a nice pre, and a big step better than your 112.

But when you are happy, why change!?

It would not perform as intended ,quite a recent experience showed me the differences over a couple of Nap200s.

At this stage I wouldn't worry much about the cd player I were you I 'd sell the preamp and flatcap which would most likely need a service and get a more recent nac202.

The serial number of the NAP 200 is 237944

Naim advise that you do not send CD players for service by courier unless it is essential, as the risk of damage is too high.

Maybe the Naim distributor in Spain can provide a recap/service, I believe they are in Malaga?

Thank you but at the moment everything is perfect. I was more worried about the amplification

That means it was built in 2006, so maybe will need a recap some time soon.

If you can not have it serviced in Spain, you can use Class A in Sheffield, UK. Website here: http://www.hifi-repairs.com/naim.htm They are an official Naim service agent, but cheaper than the Naim factory, and they will service amps from any EU country.

I don't face immidiate problems if your amp and cd are working as should

Poweramp can work for decades but will benefit from a service according to Naim every 10-12 year, I would not hurry

The preamp can be bettered but if your very happy just enjoy and play the music

Not knowing your speakers and cables involved but other improvements can be looked into, mains, stands, rack, cables not touching, room optimizing and so on..

Morning, A NAC202 and NAPSC to replace your NAC112 and FC2 will give meaningful improvements. Only you could say whether it will make a 'very happy' man even happier

Thanks for your recommendations but to be able to buy a better preamplifier I would have to sell the NAC 112 before and it is not easy. I bought the Flatcap 2 just to raise the level of 112 a bit. The new preamp will have to wait since now I can not spend more.
My speakers are Stirling MS-88 (LS3 / 5A). All the wiring is Naim and the furniture and speaker stands are self-built based on designs of Hifi-racks
