Help setting up Naim Uniti 2

Posted by: Chris T on 09 April 2018

Hello -- my dad is a big audiophile and recently bought a Uniti 2 unit when his CD player died. I've been trying to help him set it up to wirelessly connect, but this technology is a bit above my pay grade. I can get the unit to connect to the internet, but I can't figure out how I'm supposed to connect the Uniti to our PC or an iPod to play music (he specifically wants to connect to Tidal because it's uncompressed). I've checked the manual, and it hasn't been super helpful.

Looking for someone who can explain to us how this is supposed to work.

Thanks!

I would strongly recommend that you start by running an Ethernet cable from router to Uniti rather than relying on WiFi, which is often unreliable, especially with lossless streams.

Do you have an iPad or iPhone? Put the Naim app on this to control the Uniti. If you have a Tidal account, you can log into it on the app, and control it from there, no need for a computer.

If you have just bought a used Uniti, you should check that the firmware is up to date. This is a little bit awkward if you haven't done it before, but still worth doing. If you bought it from a Naim dealer, they should be able to help you with all this if necessary. Good luck!

In order to play files stored on a PC a piece of software is required. It’s called a ‘UPnP server’. It will essentialy ‘take’ the files from a PC and ‘serve’ them to your connected Uniti.

Even if you wire to the network only temporarily before going wireless, it removes a lot of variables from initial setup, and gives you a performance baseline.

Start with Spotify. Should work from Spotify app and Spotify should just find the Naim. Tidal requires a later update to the firmware and naim app as others have said. Release notes on naim sure make it clear which firmware you need for what. Enjoy.

Hi Chris, as mentioned above, in terms of "streaming music" from your PC, the PC needs uPnP software on it, or, if you're planning to use music stored on iTunes on your PC, you need to make sure the network settings on both are set up in the same "workgroup" - I seem to recall Naim actually logged into my computer and did this for me as I couldn't work it out myself.
I can't remember the exact details of doing that as I stopped using iTunes as a music source years ago.
However, a call to Naim technical support might be your quickest way to find an answer!

"Workgroup" is a concept that doesn't exist on Windows computers from 7 onwards, so unless it's a very old PC, you won't need to worry about that.

its definitely worth updating the firmware on the Uniti 2 though. A Naim dealer can do it if you don't feel like doing it yourself. By the way, if he wants to use Tidal then you or the dealer need to update it to 4.4 before applying the latest 4.6 firmware update.

And just to mention you need to have the 'HiFi' subscription to Tidal to be able to stream to Naim streamers. Good luck, its easy once you've sussed it, but as mentioned above, Naim support or the dealer you purchased it from will help you get set up.
