streaming from nas through switch

Posted by: aj55 on 09 April 2018

Dear all,

I have searched but I can't find an answer to the following question:

If I connect my nas and player on a switch which is then connected to my router via wifi, will the player get the music from the nas direct through the switch or via the router as well?

Cheers Arnold

Hi Arnold,      the NAS data stream comes via the switch only,  internet streaming such as Tidal  & web-radio comes from the router.

Via the switch. I think once IP addresses are assigned you may even take the ethernet cable off your switch but you will still access the NAS from the streamer (from the remote, not the app)

The media frames will pass directly between your mediaplayer/NAS via the switch to your streamer. The nam app control and update frames will pass between your remote device, switch and streamer and NAS via the switch.

Hi Arnold

That's exactly how I have mine wired. Streamer & NAS into CISCO switch via ethernet. Mains powered BT wifi receiver into switch via ethernet as it's too far from my BT router for a direct ethernet cable without cables going across, under or through walls, doors etc. WAF must always be considered!

Has worked well for me - streaming internet radio is problem-free. No drop outs or buffering issues to date.
