4.6 update SQ

Posted by: Harry Thind on 10 April 2018

guys,

i am posting this for two reasons. 1. The SQ after the 4.6 update might not be to everyone’s liking, as I discovered after the update. It resulted in the worst sound I have ever heard from my set up. 2. You can go back to 4.4 if you desire. Naim does not recommend it and can’t guarantee that it will work. I have reverted back to 4.4 and I am soooo glad I did.

Thats it.

Hi Harry what were you updating ......... and what were the SQ issues...

Posted on: 10 April 2018 by Peder

Strange, different opinions here, can you tell us a little about the sound after the upgrade.

Asking because I have just give my son a Naim Atom with preloved Naim Allae speaker,Naca5 3,5m,Cisco 2960 switch and an Audioquest Vodka eht-cable.

It shall be interesting to try Naim Allae with Atom. Naim Allae are 6ohm-speakers with 89db sensitivity. Naim Atom's output is 40w in 8 ohm.

Maybe I shall not do the upgrade,......OR,.....opinions please❗

I was upgrading a nd5xs with XPS power supply. I have a 282/ 250 combination ( it might be the whole set up). I just sounded er ‘bad’.

I lost bass and my sound became very ‘in your face’. I was frantic. I am happy to report that the reversal worked.

Harry, one or two others reported a recovery and improvement in SQ from 4.6 having done a Factory Reset after the update. I am in no way recommending a FR but Naim do. I would be interested to know if you completed the 4.6 update with a FR.

Nigel, did these guys mention that their Sq was terrible before FR? Cos my sound Q went south.

Did you do the 2.3.1 Atom update as my Nova did not sound the same after that - loss of bass, shouty/digital/harsh.   A factory reset did not help.

As much as people are grumbling that the older devices won't do over the air updates at least you can revert firmware on those unlike the new Atom/Nova/Star - once you update those you're stuck until a newer version comes out.

I did the newer update yesterday and am still undecided if it's back to where it was SQ wise.

Hi ALLEY CAT.

???? Interesting,I didn't know that you can't go back with Atom/Star/Nova, once you have update those.

My sons Atom came yesterday,I shall do the installation next weekend.....so I don't know what firmware it has. ◾ You must tell us when you have had more listening, what you think about the "new SQ"

I'm an old analog LP12-guy,so this is a little hard to accept????,that you maybe must do a new speaker-tunning, or something else with the system after you have made an firmware update....to have it sing again❗

I seem to remember at least one person who updated, was unhappy with the SQ, then did a FR and said SQ had improved beyond pre-update level. I can't remember the exact details but it might be worth trawling the 3 (at least) threads about 4.6. I also know of one beta tester who believes the FRs make no difference. IIRC, the FR seems to have more of a beneficial effect on NDS but you would need to check the threads.

I have a NDS and did a FR immediately after updating to 4.6 so I don't have a pre and post FR comparison. All I know is that my NDS sounds superb and a definite improvement on 4.6 (and post FR of course).

I ran the new Uniti firmware both in Beta and release versions on a Star over an extended period and could not detect any meaningful difference in sound quality, which remained outstanding value for money.

Differences on the various old-style streamer firmwares have been significantly obvious (and mostly better).

2.3.1 on my Nova was a disaster, very digital almost artificial and lifeless.

4.6 - More detail, less bass then occasional bloom drowning out most detail, wide soundstage, but again lost its mojo, just digital soulless.

The original software just had something Special, a kind of toe tapping make you want to sing.

A real shame Uniti line does not allow downgrades.

If you’ve installed 4.6 on your Nova you deserve an award for ingenuity ????

Music,.....not Hifi and digital soulless,Naim must fix this....and I hope they do❗

I too do not like the last update. It became to bright for my liking.

I have a NAC 272 and updated last week . Didn't realize it might affect SQ and so I installed SL interconnects at the same time. Overall SQ is better but not sure why. Update,SL or both. Was considering doing a factory reset but what settings will I lose and have to reset if I do ?

What a coincidence - I have just resurrected my LP12 system - I had it in storage (along with my SBLs) for a while and when I got the turntable home I could not locate the platter/mat/drive belt and my Ekos' counterweight!

I boxed my SBL 'tweeter units' in a large plastic box to go into storage - tonight I wondered what was below them in the box under the 'protective duvet' and found the platter/mat/drive belt and counterweight!

Have spent the last few hours hoovering/tidying the room and and currently enjoying a few albums I bought from Amazon which I've purchased but had nothing to play them on for over 2 years!

So interestingly having my first outing with the Nova using a non-streaming/digital source!

LP12/Lingo/Ekos/OC-9 Mk II/Linto > Uniti Nova (Analogue 1) > Epos ES14's

This is amazing fun and my daughter is fascinated by the vinyl and I've had her help me set the system up tonight - she's been singing away to ABBA's Voulez Vous and loves the huge album covers and inner sleeve lyrics.

The physical intercation with the LP is so much fun and you just enjoy it rather than being critical of digital sources/downloads.

SBL's next!

4.6 is better but require speakers re-positioning, at least in my case.
It's a much bigger upgrade than moving from a Netgear GS105 to a Cisco 2960, which I did recently.

Glad to hear you're still here!

The thread on 4.6 confused me too - seems to be 2.6.9508 according to the app.

2.3.1 was awful for me too - factory reset did not help.

Been away for 10 days or so and updated to 2.6.9508 last night.

Probably better than 2.3.1 but overall my impression is still uninvolving and as you say 'lost its 'mojo' '.

Before 2.3.1 I had various tracks that I just loved to listen to, since then I struggle to remain enthused and listen to the streaming sources/LAN based digitial media.

Something just doesn't seem right, and I'm not sure how to address this without a sideways step or upgrade of some kind.

I agree, with my system speaker re-positioning improves SQ even more.  I found the new bass strength/firmness can gain more SQ by moving speakers out from the rear wall.   Bass has not gone to a level thats 'too much',  but its got closer.  At low polite conversation level its unchanged - SQ is notably nicely improved, but bass is still very OK.    Its when I go to serious (realistic) listening volumes then the improved bass gets nearer to becoming bloated.   I've moved my speakers out & its adjusted the bass to near acceptable.  My experimenting is still work in progress & I know its probably going to take a few days,   but maybe 10cm is just enough to reduce the worst & keep the best.

Should we ask a 4.7 for a new bass correction? When are going to have an update menu with 4 or 5 typical DSP room acoustic corrections? I was hoping the new streamers would offer that. ????

No absolutely not,  you’re reading stuff into this incorrectly,  the amount l’ve moved them out to fine tune (so far) is minimal, better think of it as recorrecting the amount I had previously moved them in.

Room correction is a different subject & not applicable to this firmware or thread.

I took my NDX to 4.6, decided the bass went all wooly, went back to 4.4 then tried 4.6 again a second time followed but a factory reset and the result this time was better. But I have changed some other things (switch and messing around with two different servers on the NAS one transcoding to WAV one not) so probably a few too many variables to come to any firm conclusions other than I now think 4.6 sounds pretty much the same as 4.4 did. So far a lot of faffing around for little if any benefit but perhaps in time I will start to appreciate improvements if they exist. Seems like Naim have opened a can of worms... poor sods were just trying to make things better. I feel a bit sorry for them actually, there was a time they only had to make CD players, sell them and maybe a replace a few mechs to keep people happy.

Posted on: 11 April 2018 by Kiwi cat

Just had 4.6 installed by local Naim dealer on my 272. Initial impressions are of voices seem more “up front” and bass is tighter. Overall happy I had it done. Jackson Browne seems to be singing in the room on “Yeah yeah”. Bass guitar is better defined on Bob Segars “ Night Moves”. Perhaps a bit more digital edge? Time will tell, but so far so good.
