guys,
i am posting this for two reasons. 1. The SQ after the 4.6 update might not be to everyone’s liking, as I discovered after the update. It resulted in the worst sound I have ever heard from my set up. 2. You can go back to 4.4 if you desire. Naim does not recommend it and can’t guarantee that it will work. I have reverted back to 4.4 and I am soooo glad I did.
Thats it.

I agree it could be tricky unless they've already got a fallback mechanism for updating via USB - however many devices over the years have allowed firmware updates say by simply having the firmware on a USB stick and powering on with stick inserted, or the same with firmware on an optical disc for disc spinners. I'm simply suggesting an update could be done in this manner not that there are routines built-in to do so but there might be.
Alternatively the more adventurous user could potentially tinker with networking configuration to spoof the streamer to access a file held on the LAN rather than on Naim servers - the firmware file would naturally be needed stored locally, plus perhaps a modification to the version of the firmware to allow an older one to replace a newer one just with a tweaked version number.
Naturally such methods are cumbersome and most wouldn't want to fiddle, but I was amused to see so many concerns about drivers to enable updating the old units etc and I strongly suspect most users just 'go with the flow' and accept updates and would prefer automatci over the air updating, but I was left thinking you lucky so and so's as you have a method to revert!
