What speaker cable are you using?

Wondering what you are using for speaker cable?

Some excellent threads about SQ and power supply upgrades etc but what's the concensus on which speaker cable is best for Naim products.

Personally I'm running Townsend Isolda cable between Uniti 2 and PMC 25.23 speakers.

NACA5 for ages, but have changed to Mogami with the Shahinians. They time nearly as well but are much better on acoustic timbre.

Mogami here too, but then again, Shahinians here too. Mogami was suggested to me by John Burns of Pear Audio, the importers of Shahinian. He was right that it works much better than NACA5 in my system. It’s cheap too, but I have to say that I have no idea how it might work with other speaker brands.

What Mogami loudspeaker cable please?

It boogies like NACA5 with only slightly less leading-edge slam, but has greater timbral fidelity and mid and upper detail. It also goes deeper and has a slightly broader and deeper soundstage - at least in my system.

3m per side of cheap as chips Linn K20 here and sounds great.

At what length does the SQ of NACA5 begin to get worse?

Posted on: 26 April 2018 by Richard Dane

I would say that appreciable losses probably start to kick in around 20m per side. However, I’ve never heard beyond this length, it’s just Naim’s Max recommendation.

Fab, thanks.

wrt NACA5;

1. if the length of the required cable run (ie distance from speaker to amp) exceeds the actual length of the cable, is coiling the cable considered inappropriate?

2. I presume both cables should be equal length for optimal results?

Posted on: 26 April 2018 by Pigeon_Fancier

The single most perplexing naim topic for me. NACA5 for many years on ‘Sunday best’ and more recently study system. Brief hiatus for DNM Resolution when I needed a longer (7m) run - and I liked it for ease of use, minimal visual impact and lack of discernible effect versus NACA5. And now trying Chord Epic Reference. Too soon to judge but I do like Chord cables and am a half-believer in cable upgrades. Just with speaker cable somehow I find it very difficult to isolate and characterise the effects. Methodologically simple to test but in practice a head scratch. Reading between the lines on this forum, I am not alone.

It's very difficult  to fit in the plugs because it's so thick and they're are not reported to be any sonic benefits, but I've not heard them myself....

I've just had a look at Super Lumina cable prices. A 3m pair is not at an unreasonable price.  I paid around $5k for my Crystal Cables, so may consider SL speaker cables next.

I'll take this as a joke

i use apertura tiny with nap 300dr and apertura speakers.  I had naca5 before.   In next future i will buy kharma matrix speakers cables, a good match for naim amps and apertura speakers.

I have Audience speaker and interconnects, they have a very neutral and natural sound.

2972 here too. Why? Because it was recommended by the UK Shahinian importer: John Burns at Pear Audio. That’s his recommendation for Shahinian speakers, but if you are using other speakers I guess it could well be that other Mogami’s may be preferred, but I’ve no personal experience of any other types.

I don't know if the 500 is fine with higher capacity speaker cables, but 2972 is more than 400pf/m in total (when wired as opposite pairs)

That's way too high for optimal performance with most Naim power amps.

TQ Black II for me with TQ Ultrablack jumpers

it seems to depend on which amp one's using. in a review of the 250DR in The Ear, Steve Sells of Naim says: “...you can put any cable on it. The last version, the NAP 250 Mk2 was also cable tolerant. It’s only really the older models that you have to be a bit careful with."

Apparently JV OKd it to John of Pear Audio for the big Shahinians

Just put in 4m runs of Witch Hat Phantom replacing WH N2 in my active system. Tidied things up physically as the 3.5m runs to the speaker further from the rack was a tad short and I was using 2 short runs of A5 on the closer speaker. Mismatched types and lengths; shock horror. Anyway only a couple of days in and everything is sounding greatly improved. Bass is noticibly richer in timbre although that might be a change in the midrange emphasis. Overall a better balanced presentation but with added separation and clarity. No idea if these cables will benefit from burn in but out of the box I’m happy thus far. Having an active system there was no way I could consider the likes of Super Lumina. The WHP came in considerably under £1k for three pairs. Maybe a lot for wires in the “real world” but feels ok to me considering the improvement in presentation.

Steven Hopkins from Naim expressed to me in an E-Mail just the opposite when questioned about different speaker cables when used with the Classic series, including the DR amps and the SN2 integrated.  Actually, he specified at least one cable manufacturer to avoid. To say you can put any cable on the newer amps may not be advisable.

Might be a good idea for Richard Dane to chime in and maybe clear things up!!
