Uniti Nova HDMI
Posted by: hifinewbie on 11 April 2018
Hello Folks
Does anyone know the Nova HDMI component specifications and which HDMI cable version should be used for connective Nova to TV (samsung ua55hu7000 with HDMI 2.0 component).
Iam trying to connect Nova to TV with 1.4 HDMI version cables but it says no signal.
Regards

Naim just specify 1.4 or 2.0 versions. I have a very cheap 1.4 cable, and it works. Have you set the TV sound output to PCM?
Using HDMI is a hit and miss thing. I have a Star and a Sony UHD HDR. When first switching on my TV, I need to switch off my Star, wait a few sec, then switch on the Star just for my Sony to detect the external audio.
I am using HDMI High Speed and at ARC on my Sony side.

Yes did set it to PCM, on TV screen it shows that uniti is connected and volume number on the screen goes up and down with the Nova remote, but there is no sound. And also says no signal on Nova.

ohh thats bad, i need this function to work or else it is not much use connecting to TV.
Initially I am using optical, but I do not want to touch the Star's remote, so I switch to HDMI ARC.
When I first started out, I also have sound issues.. then I switch on and off.. do crazy settings, anyhow set.. then suddenly have sound.. I can say the experience is definitely not plug and play unlike optical.
yes optical option is quite inconvenient and major barrier for blissful married life :-)
Speaking personally, in my experience with AV, HDMI can be a bit of a minefield and very hit and miss on things like ARC, for which, I'm reliably informed, most manufacturers seem not to follow any set standard.
I'll single out our Samsung TV here as HDMI seems to be fairly reliable on our SONY and Panasonic screens but constantly needs plugging, unplugging, jiggling, re-booting to work on the Samsung, regardless of which HDMI input is used. And that's just to get sound or picture from a Blu-ray player or WD box... And that's not even using ARC. For the latter, who knows, what delights are in store...
HFN, I'd be tempted to try a different HDMI lead, failing that, confer with your dealer. Failing that... change the Samsung (although, in the light of the above, that may not guarantee to give you a more reliable ARC installation).
Yes, HDMI performance can be unreliable. Is your streamer firmware up to date, as there was an HDMI fix in a recent update? This seemed to improve reliability for me.
Yes, I forgot to mention that Naim have been working on trying to get the HDMI ARC function to be more compatible and so worth checking on your firmware.
Problem is solved by replacing the HDMI cable ( Audioquest pearl 2.0) which is ARC compatible.
will test for couple of days and let you all know.
thanks for all the comments, it was helpful.

It is on latest firmware update 2.6.
Results after few days testing : HDMI ARC feature works with Nova.
Set up : TV connects with Cable Setup box, Android Box & Xbox One S with HDMI cables. Nova connected to TV through HDMI ARC.
Tests :
1. Power ON TV, will ON the Nova and content from cable box plays from Nova connected speakers (MA Silver 300).- Works well when the input on Nova is previously set to HDMI. Does not work when the input was changed to something else. Power Off the TV will Off the Nova.
2. Power ON TV and change the source to Android box OR Xbox, will ON the Nova and content plays from Nova connected speakers (MA Silver 300).- Works well when the input on Nova is previously set to HDMI. Power Off the TV will Off the Nova.
3. Power ON TV and invoke built in YouTube OR Netflix apps , will ON the Nova and content plays from Nova connected speakers (MA Silver 300).- Works well when the input on Nova is previously set to HDMI. Power Off the TV will Off the Nova.
Running in this mode for 5 days and it seems to be working well, i wonder why does the HDMI ARC not send a signal to Nova to change input to HDMI when it was not on HDMI input previously as HDMI ARC is bidirectional and should be able to send that signal to Nova?? Is this Working as designed?
Second Query - i have found that sometimes the volume level is not same on you tube videos, whereas i don't see that problem when running the same videos on TV speakers.
Hope this helps the Uniti owners!
Cheers

Wow you get it consistently? I find that when I power off my TV for extended period of time and switch on again, my Star will lose it sometimes and I have to power on/off Star to "catch" it or sometimes totally restart Star and TV to reconnect again.
It works for me, but again it is tested for 5 days only.

Sadly, this is a deliberate design decision taken by Naim. to quote Phil Harris: "It is intended behaviour as it is not simply a soundbar and as such it is expected for it to behave as an audio system and not a soundbar".
I personally disagreed, and this ultimately lead to me returning my atom for a full refund. I ended up with a lyngdorf that's excellent but also doesn't really work well with HDMI, that said, it takes IR input, so at least I can use a universal remote to tie things together.

Well they should reconsider it, it believe it would be a software fix and users can be given a choice to choose how they want to use HDMI function.
I suggested that too. In fact the promise that they would implement this as an option (and fix the many hdmi bugs) would have kept me as a customer as I rather liked the atom however to quote Phil again...
”I would presume that it would be possible to change the functionality so that it did have an all-encompassing override but as far as I am aware there are no plans to do this at this time.”
HifiNewbie, thanks for your testing!
So ONLY if the source of Atom/Star/Nova was put on HDMI input before we switched it off, only then the TV will switch it on?
What happens if the Atom/Star/Nova was on another input and you switch on the TV? Does the Atom/Star/Nova then stay off?
Bert: assuming nothing has changed since earlier in the year when I had a hdmi atom then yes.
If the uniti was set to another input (analogue, digital, streaming etc) when it was last switched off then it’ll stay off when you switch the tv on.
Basically, it only listens for and accepts hdmi commands when the hdmi input is set. Otherwise it just ignores them.
Yes that’s correct it just stays off
One of the things I found funny was that Phil Harris claimed that having an input override all other inputs would be massively inconsistent with the rest of the device. When I pointed that that this is *exactly* how the airplay input worked I got no reply...
Well that’s how HDMI ARC function should work, if that’s inconsistent then let the user decide it by adding it to the settings as a option.

I can only suggest you tell that to Naim when I said it they weren’t really interested and implied I was a fool for asking.

That‘s absolutely right. That‘s how the HDMI ARC function should work. In fact that‘s how my Lyngdorf TDAI-2170 works right now. Naim should implement this decision as user option. I hope they will release an update therefore in the future.
I ordered a Nova in KW06. Still waiting.

Hi David,
The HDMI input only powers on the unit if it was powered off with the HDMI input connected - this is by design and the design decision was made for the purpose of if you were listening to - say - TIDAL on headphones and someone else turns on the TV then the TV doesn't grab the Atom away from your listening without you selecting the HDMI input.
I am not aware that I used the term "massively inconsistent" when explaining that.
For AirPlay it is part of Apples certification requirements that AirPlay is able to "grab" the device if you elect to AirPlay to it (however that is only when you elect to AirPlay to it as opposed to just when you turn on your phone).
Best
Phil
