Replacement speaker suggestions for my system?

Posted by: GTB-Buckaroo on 13 April 2018

My Linn Nexus speakers need replacing due to a failed tweeter.

Yes, I know, those Nexus speakers were cheap and nasty but, in their day, I subscribed to the then theory of it was 'source first, speakers last' in system building. [62/hi-cap-140] Actually, I did audition a few pairs of speakers at the time and liked the sound.

I'd like a pair of floor standing speakers of similar size, with a budget of around a £1000.00. As I have the luxury of grandchildren, my new speakers will need to have removable grilles[ One of my kids decided to press the inner cone of a tweeter on the then-new Nexus speaker when the grilles were off which cost me a hundred odd quid to replace; I've no desire to see one of their offspring repeat history]

Thoughts, suggestions please!

I was about to recommend some used Linn Keilidh's but their frontgrill is just a simple sock

Performance wise they are great purchases, much better than Nexus if you wish to stay in the Linn camp, mighty fine match with your amp

Way below budget

I always liked totem speakers, don't know if they would meet your needs or not though.

If you considered a pair of pre-loved speakers their are certainly one or two options in the focal range, you can pick up a set of Aria 926’s for about  £1,200-£1,300. I would suggest a visit to your nearest dealer.

Dynaudio x32's can be had for under £1,000 and PMC 23's for a little over a thousand pre loved and both go great with Naim.

Linn speakers are a bit too relaxed/refined, so if you like the Naim sound try Naim Allae speakers

Get something designed to use with the grills on, like Naim or Thiel speakers. Allaes or CS1.6 spring to mind though you will spend some time waiting for a pair to turn up.

Or Quad ESL 57s, they wouldn’t mess with those tweeters twice.

There’s a pair of Neat Motive 2s going in the Flea Pit for £650.  Job done I’d say
