Qnap setup advice

Posted by: ted_p on 13 April 2018

Hi over the past week my qnap HS-251 has started giving me a lot of problems accessing my music.

Last night i reset the nas back to factory default settings, before i copy my music from my backup to the nas i was hoping the forum members can  give me some advice with the configuration.

With the latest updates to the QTS operating system, it keeps asking me if i want to setup "snapshots"  i think this is similar to Apples time-machine, so the question is should i turn this on, any guidance would be gratefully received.

Ted I use a QNAP HS 210 - what software as you using to control the UpNP? - I use Asset

I find with all the QNAP upgrades i go in and manualy turnoff the other Apps running to be honest, I only use the NAS for music,

I wouldn't bother.

I vaguely remember coming across this after a FW update.

If you didn't need it before you won't need it now. And IIRC it allocates HDD space to the process, thereby lowering the storage capacity?

I wouldn't bother either - I got that message when I updated the softwae on mine; it is generally something useful if you are creating virtual machines on the NAS - it allows you to instantly switch back to a previous configuration of your VM, should you break it in some way. I'm not familiar with Time Machine, but I believe it's a similar concept.

As you mention you have a backup you obviously do keep them  so you don't need to try to use snapshotting to do that for you.

Again thank you for all your help.
