4.6 Update & 272 Specifically

Posted by: GraemeH on 14 April 2018

Having the benefit of some ‘serious’ listening to my 4.6 updated 272, frankly, I’m astonished. My little Proac Tablette 10’s are energised like never before...surely a ‘speaker this size can’t produce such range and scale! ‘Presence’ is noticeably better too, transparent & holographic to the point I want to touch the instruments at times. Tidal is also greatly improved, so much so I’d not think twice of flipping between it and the NAS during serious listening.

Seriously - What is it that Naim have done here to eek out such ‘high-end’ (and it is!) performance from the 272?

Glad to hear you’ve got great results after the update. I have to say my bare 272 sounds better too, for the most part. I agree that Streaming via Tidal Hifi has taken a big step towards my bare CDX2 sound which I’m delighted about. I have to tame some bass boom which has presented itself since the update, but I’m confident I can do that.

Graeme, I’m so glad you are pleased with the new firmware. We went through two iterations in beta; I felt that the first was better but that more could be squeezed out, and happily Naim agreed. I was delighted with the result, as were other beta testers, but it’s always a bit worrying to say yes, that’s good, when others will be using other setups in other rooms and may well think differently. The changes are simply due to different versions of the DSP, and choosing the best one.

Very happy here too GRAEMEH,I have to wait a few more hours to crank up the volume, but I have been listening to LINN JAZZ all night at around 25 on the dial, and it is SO awesome at low volume, that I really don’t feel the need to turn it up.Should be a very enjoyable weekend, putting this update through its paces,my only gripe so far,is how stressful it was doing the update, for a non computer guy.

Not 272 specific - sorry but its relevant to your post.    Agreed on CDX2,  I hadn't thought about it until last evening when I had an album on not played for a while,  one track in particular with CDX2 the singer was in the room with you,  that affect had gone somewhat with NDX,   but with v4.6 she's almost (but not quite) back again.

Re speakers:  I've been playing all week on & off & have settled on a position where at serious (realistic) volumes I now only get a small touch of bass bloom on albums with strong & deep sub bass,  & as not many have real sub bass,  I'm more or less concluded that just a relatively small move further out from the rear wall does the trick & 10 to 15cm (4 - 6 inches) is probably where I'll end up.

No 272 here  but I have found Tidal more enjoyable to listen to recently. I used to see it as no more than a tool for music discovery, and thought that I would revert to Spotify to save a bit of cash. I just used to listen to a few tracks, and if I liked them, put them on a CD shopping list, but I keep catching myself being drawn into the music and forgetting about online shopping, which has to be a good thing.

NDX owner, over and out!!
