4.6 Update to an ND5 XS Using A Mac

Posted by: RERobbins on 14 April 2018

I've got an older Macbook Air running the current Mac OS.

I have also installed the usb serial driver from silabs.com as directed.

The usb device shows up on my Mac OS but when I run the Naim Streamer Updater with the USB cable connected to my Mac and my ND5 XS, which is switched on, the usbserial port does not appear in the program's drop down menu.

I'm not sure how to proceed.

If you've only just downloaded the driver, you will probably need to restart your computer before it shows up.Try that first, if you haven't already done so.

Yes, I've done that.  Several times.  I've also power-cycled the ND5 XS.  I'm stumped.

Strange that so many people seem to be having problems with this. I have an older version of the slabs driver, and it has worked perfectly well for all the updates I've done over the last few years. Maybe worth having a look through the other threads on the same issue, to see if there's anything there that helps. If all else fails, give Naim a call on Monday, they are usually pretty good at getting people up and running.

I had the same issue on the last two updates, using my MacBook Pro, so I've cut and pasted from my post on the subject, under another topic, a few days back.

"Previous attempts to update  firmware didn't go well, since the required SiLabs USB driver wouldn't show up in the "about this Mac" window, so I had to resort to asking my dealer to perform the update.

This time, "same old same old", no sign of the driver, although the Silabs downloader insisted, as above, that it had been successfully downloaded and installed.

Nevertheless, I decided to press on, and opened the Naim downloader / installer, where the first window asks the user to choose the required Com port, and, blow me down, there it is, listed as "Uart Controller".

With fingers crossed, I initiated the download process, and, some twenty minutes later, version 4.6.00 is now running on the NDS."

Hope this helps.

This is the advice I received, I read through the thread and found that Seth’s comments solved the port issue for me.

’David your issue may be down to the security settings in System Preferences > Security and Privacy. There was a long thread on this for Mac users who could only see the Bluetooth port https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...driver-in-osx?page=1 on page 2 Kacper has highlighted a possible solution. I have to say the documentation from Naim was uninspiring to say the least. Maybe they just assume we will all schlep our gear back to a dealer to do the work??’

@RERobbins: Forgive what may seem a silly question but your USB cable is definitely one with data connections in it and not a cell phone charger cable - right? Also, I presume that you received an on-screen confirmation that the USB serial driver was successfully installed? I simply pressed on regardless after that regardless of what I could or could not see and everything fell into place.

Actually, I think the Naim documentation with the zipped notes is pretty good - especially considering the number of variables.

@RERobbins: Not to insult your intelligence, so forgive me if this is another silly question but you do have an enabled Ethernet (or possibly WiFi) connection to your laptop on the same network as the ND5 XS?

@Newnaim16 The USB cable is definitely a fully wired USB cable and not a cell phone charger cable.  I received an on-screen confirmation that the driver was installed.  The driver itself appears in the system reports.  I have a solid network connection.  The driver is there.  The update software doesn't see the port.

That link doesn't work for me.  Can you point me to the thread?  I'm only seeing the bluetooth port.

Go to thread called 4.6 firmware update problem, in that thread there is a response off L Taylor which contains an activity to the other thread. In the other thread look for feedback off Seth. Hopefully this helps

Thank you.  This has proven to be far too tedious.

Rerobbins, could I help?  Didn’t realise my post had actually helped, so very pleased with that!

Here it is;

...if you have a later MacOS (10.13 is current), the operating system deliberately stops the driver from running as it isn’t trusted. I had this problem, which sounds a lot like the orginal issue, when using a USB cable to my NDX (not serial adapter) but it’s not Naim’s fault.

Try “Apple” menu -> “System Preferences” -> “Security & Privacy”. On the “general” tab, you might see a notice that SiLabs software (from an unidentified developer) has been blocked (at the bottom). There should be an “open anyway” button to allow it to run. Restart the Naim Updater app and see if that pesky driver isn’t listed!

That's the information I needed.  Thank you very much.

You are very welcome. Hope it sorts the problem - and it is worth the hassle, I’m astounded by how right my system sounds now.
