Uniti 2.6 - much quieter?
Posted by: dave-mac on 15 April 2018
Does anyone else find volume levels much quieter since 2.6? What I used to play at 30, now seems to have to be 40, and still lacks punch. What the hecks going on, are my ears going?!
If you've not done so try a factory reset from the Settings Menu.
May or may not help. A few of us do feel the sound has lost something in recent updates, conversely owners of older units generally feel theirs are better. A very strange state of affairs.
Some of the firmware update threads have got a bit confusing between old and new model firmware versions, so I created a new one yesterday to discuss the recent updates on the Atom/Nova/Star. If you've not seen it, it may be worth adding your comments there too.

Yeah, I've just been looking through the forum. I am 100% definitely in the sounds worse camp. I only updated hoping it would fix the freezing and non responsive issues. It hasn't. AND it's introduced a new bug where if you skip a track in spotify, the next track often starts and plays but it no sounds comes out. Moving the playback header brings the sound back.

Did you check the max volume setting to make sure it wasn't changed by the firmware update? Many Unitis had it set to 85, I think, but if the update reset it to a lower level than you had before, that might explain your issue. It probably isn't this, but worth a quick check just to make sure.
Well that's strange - the max volume option had completely disappeared out of the app. I updated the app and it re-appeared. This tells me something had definitely changed in regards to how the volume output works in the 2.6 firmware. I don't know what, but I'm not happy.
Oh, it's set to 100% btw.
Totally agree .Before Firmware update I had my Nova set at sound level of 50 on now I am having to play it at 60.

If 60 sounds just as good as 50 used to, I’d chalk it up to recalibration due to somebody’s opinion that the Volume control was too touchy.
This is a problem classic NACs have that cannot be programmed away. Not a big deal to me, but it points to an advantage the electronic Volume controls have, whatever they may or may not trade for it.

It's not just the ~25% (in my estimation) drop in volume though, the sound is also flat. It sounds on par with my muso now, bar the extra stereo spread. It wiped the floor with the muso before this firmware.
Same with my Atom. The sound has definitely changed: lacks grunt on the speakers, more detailed though but somewhat lacking the naim PRaT. really strange...
Bouba please see this thread too:

I was playing some stuff late last night on my Nova at 40-50 volume which would easily have annoyed the neighbours before at that time of night - all sounded rather apathetic - detail but little warmth, poor bass, and just far too polite sounding to be engaging.
I had to ask myself how on earth this was the kind of sound to be expected from a Naim streamer.
Maybe a stupid question, maybe I haven't read everything in all this upgrade-threads,but can someone explain to me...... I ask because I have a new Atom here, that my son shall have. Not upgrade to 4,6,it still have 4,4 I think....it's complitly new, unpacked.
It write's about the upgrade from 4,4 to 4,6 all over this forum.....somebody like the upgrade, somebody don't....???? But what is 2,6 .... The headline for this thread❓
/Peder ????

4.4 and 4.6 are firmware versions for the old Naim streamers. 2.6 is a firmware version for the new streamers.
CHRISSU,....Oooooh,it was so easy ???? Thank's.

Peder - please see the thread I link to above which was created specifically to discuss experiences on the new Uniti series as people were getting confused by firmware versions in other threads.
I was originally told it is not possible to go back to an older firmware but this is not the case and it can be done.
