NAC 82 A particular annoying feature ?

Posted by: Chris 1970 on 16 April 2018

When using the mute button on and off there is a click through loudspeakers (or headphones) from my NAC 82.  Is this normal or not ? Other preamplifiers are silent when engaging and disengaging the mute button and I know this having used NAC 112 and 282 on some previous occasions.  I may have liked to use the mute more frequently but I don't like the clicks so I prefer not to use it. So what is the general opinion should clicks occur or not ?.

My own experience is that the mute is pretty quiet on Naim pre-amps.  The only time I've come across a loud click it has indicated a problem somewhere.

Firstly try disconnecting all bar the signal grounded Naim source.  Then see whether you still get a loud click when activating mute. If so, it may indicate a pre-amp fault of some kind.

I've just had a check on my 82. Using the front panel button, the mute is silent (if you see what I mean) turning on and off. Using the remote (a recent Narcom after one too many drops of the original) I do geta very faint click throughthe speakers toggling it.

Interesting but whether I'm using a remote or front panel muting on and off the clicks are exactly the same so in my case it's not necessarily a matter of what type of remote control. Whatever conclusions in the end at least the sound quality remains acceptable which of course is the most important of all things.

No clicks on my recently serviced 82, quiet as a mouse.

Don't remember my old 82 making a noise when muting either...

Worth a query to Naim in Salisbury.

However, what is the system configuration (sources, power supply and power amplifier). Are you using a Naim power supply, and correctly connected, and - do you have the system connected (however remotely) with a TV, Sky Box or the like?

Perhaps irrelevant but more information might suggest some avenues of amelioration.

Same with mine as well.

No TV abominations of any sort and everything is connected correctly so I won't deviate into what type of power supplies or power amplifiers which would be outside the general idea of the NAC82 simply because identical connections were perfectly OK with a NAC282 several years ago so it stands to reason that connected power supplies and/or power amplifiers have nothing to do with those clicks from the NAC82.

If the power supplies are of the unmentionable variety (i.e. not Naim) then all bets are off - and further discussion ends here.

All I can say here is that the click is not right and probably indicates a system earthing issue somewhere or some need of service attention.

I should think that HiCAP (s) is (are) of implied variety (also appropriate SNAIC(s) otherwise I wouldn't have bothered to start this very unusual topic of discussion. However I am stopping it now because I don't wish to read the inevitable conclusion whatever people may write namely my undesirable spending of money for some abstract service or suchlike. It may suit millionaires but not me. Thank you anyway for interesting ideas and I can cope with it as it is without using the mute switch unless of course miraculously huge sums come my way for exploring likely service.

Chris, Hicap(s) are fine, and provided properly serviced shouldn't pose a problem.

Out of interest, have tried the mute with the NAC82 on just one Hicap?  Give it a go, as I'd be interested in the result.

I've just taken half an hour out to rebuild my amp, replacing the Hicap with a Supercap that arrived today. No clicks now even using the remote. The Hicap in question was a Naim one, serviced a year or so ago.

My 252 produces the click too, but not every time, mostly in winter, when heating is on. I thought it is normal?

Unexpected and quite inexplicable.

Definitely exactly the same clicks with one HIcap or with two which overall the suggestion of service inspection becomes highly plausible (only when plenty of money is available).

OK, thanks Chris.
