202/200 speaker cable/DR

Posted by: petzhou on 19 April 2018

I appreciate this post has probably been discussed previously by forum members, but I would appreciate your comments. I now have a 200/202 with a napsc.Speakers Kudos C10's. I had an xs flatcap 2x then an xs2. I used TQ Black cable and thought it was excellent. Shortly after buying my 2003 202 (serviced earlier this year) and 200( heading for service soonish) I changed to TQ Black 2.

I'm underwhelmed to be honest - little change to my ears over the original TQ Black - which goes against all the reviews.

Perhaps this combination is better with Nac A5 given it's age - or does servicing bring the units up to current spec and the speaker cables aren't just as picky? (for the want of a better expression)

With regard to future upgrade if I add a Hi Cap Dr is it still worthwhile thinking of DR'ing the 200 or should I keep my money and move further up the Naim range.

Appreciate anyone's comments.

If you get a Hicap DR there is no point whatsoever getting the 200 DRed. In fact, I don’t believe it’s possible. The DR part of the 200DR relates only to the preamp power supply, not to the power amp itself. Beyond the 202/Hicap/200 the 282 is the way to go.

As to why TQB2 sounds little different to TQB to you, maybe it simply is little different. Purchases should be made on audition, not based on reviews. If you think about it, you rarely read a bad review of a new product - bad reviews don’t attract advertising revenue or shift copy.

Peter hi,

I agree with HH.

For what it’s worth I’ve no experience at all of TQ cables but have compared Naca 5 with Chord Odyssey I  prefer the latter with my Kudos.   I do think to some extent cable is speaker dependent.

Good luck.

I would get the service done first and let the amp settle in and get used to the sound. HH is correct, the DR upgrade is not available on the 200, you would need to trade it in for a 200DR. or get a HicapDR instead.

Once you’ve done all that, your dealer can probably lend you some NACA5 to try.

Peter

I ran a 202/HCDR/200 for a few years and was very happy, also like Lindsay have Cord Odyssey cable - they do like working together - and as HH says you can retro fit DR to 200

depending on budget I would look at 200DR or HCDR for 200 if you can demo DR

enjoy the journey

He said that you can’t - and he’s right!

When I was running a similar spec system to you..some years ago...my dealer lent me some super lumina cables ( 7 m long)

Although I could just decern a small positive improvement...it was tiny ...and that was with a £4000 increase in cable cost!!

I really think you may be overestimating the resolution of your present system?

In this instance it’s possibly helped by the fact that Kudos wire their speakers with Chord cabling.
