Unitiserve problem

Posted by: Mike A on 23 April 2018

I shut my Unitiserve down last Friday, along with my Uniti prior to leaving for a weekend break.

Having returned, I switched the US back on this evening and the  green logo is flashing continually.

Ahead of a call to Naim tomorrow, can anyone offer advice on the problem and solution??

Thanks in anticipation,

Mike

That happened to mine once: I turned it off and left it for a while, then back on again, and it was fine after that.

Thanks Chris - I'll leave it off for a couple of hours and have a second attempt to wake it up.

Good luck! Hope you have a backup just in case?

Mike, had a similar issue a few years ago, and it was an early warning of impending disk drive failure. Although the flashing logo managed to sort itself out on a couple of occasions ( by me shutting down and retrying after an hour or two), the disk eventually failed. This meant sending it back to Naim, which was fairly painless, they managed to retrieve all the music and transferred it to the new disk. So I didn’t even need to resort to my nas back up. That was 5 years ago, since when it’s been faultless.

Hopefully yours will be fine, but even if it resolves itself I would make sure your back up is in order.

good luck,

Chris, Paul, thanks for responding.

I'm pleased to say I've had a backup running for some time - for both US ripped tracks and downloads I've purchased and saved to the UQ. Too much else to do this evening, so I'll try the turn-it-off-and-on-again approach in the morning!

Mike

Flashing logo during a start-up... not good. Either it’s stuck in BIOS during a start-up or a disk failure. Either is beyond an end user’s ability to fix.  I’d have it checked by the factory.

I hope it manages to start up properly.

Good luck.

i have a high quality linear ps on my serve. I heard that it secures more the serve from electrical problems. I hope so but don’t know really.

UnitiServe has a special filter on its cable, so should be fine.

Flashing ogo is unfortunately typically associted with software problems on the US platform....

I spoke to Naim today - startup is still not happening. In the absence of a VGA link and display being available ( either at home or my  Naim dealer), I need to return it to Salisbury. Heads up ...  in 4 weeks time or so I'll be seeking advice on the procedure to transfer my backup from a NAS to the Uniti Serve (unless Naim manage to recover it).

Thanks for all your responses,

Mike

I expect they will be able to recover it and anyway it may not be a HD problem.

You could always see whether there is anyone who lives near you and has a VGA display. For example if you lived near Guildford......

Keeping my fingers crossed that the files are intact.

Dropped my Unitiserve off at my Naim dealer yesterday. Guess I can now legitimately apply for membership of that esteemed society??

Welcome!

Thanks Adam - I was just contemplating whether any interviews, exams, secret rituals etc might be required!! Having just followed the link, that thread appears to be closed????. Did the cheque- made out to a bank in Bermuda- not arrive??

Patience you must have my young Padawan.

The master of the ceremony [@mention:48872963983698699] will have you initiated in no time at all.

Yes, Mike A. As master of ceremonies it is I you need to make a sizeable cheque out to.

Seriously though many of us have had the dreaded flashing logo and failure to restart problem with our USs. Two (or was it three) times for me and same for Adam IIRC. I must say that my US has performed faultlessly ever since. Bu**er, why did I say that!

Each time, Naim were able to retrieve all my data and transfer it to the new hard rive, if indeed this is the same problem you have. It is good that you have back up NAS though.

You should be confident that Naim will get your US sorted.

I am afraid that you will need at least one additional US failure for acceptance into the club. For your sake, I hope you never qualify for entry.

Many thanks Nigel - I'll keep my fingers crossed for positive news from Salisbury in the coming weeks.

Normal service has resumed - flashing green light....

3rd time in 6 yrs. This has to be the most unreliable product Naim has ever produced.

You are so experienced at this, you probably don't need reminding that if you can find a VGA display that you can connect to the socket on the back, you can restart the US and see which stage it gets stuck at.

Also there are faults that a good dealer can fix which would if you were lucky mean that it wouldn't have to go back to Salisbury again. You could also give Phil Harris a ring. He is a wiz with Unitiserves.

Good luck

Delighted to have my repaired Unitiserve returned and hooked up! Maybe I should buy some more music as a welcome home gesture!!

Excellent idea!

Happy to see that the US is back in business.
