How to control a Uniti Star when connected by LAN ?

Posted by: It's me on 24 April 2018

We have a Naim Uniti Star and we have a problem we couldn’t solve. Maybe it is just a handling problem but we weren’t able to fix it:

The Uniti is connected with the router by Wifi. Unfortunately the Wifi is very unstable, especially on weekends. So we tried to connect the Uniti with the router by LAN connection. The LAN connection itself works correct, no problems until now

But now the problem: When the Uniti is connected by LAN, it automatically disconnects from the Wifi. And when there is no Wifi connection it is impossible to connect the Naim app (iPhone/iPad) with the Uniti because the connection between iPad and Naim needs a Wifi. So we have to decide between Wifi or LAN. But io control the Uniti  over a LAN connection is impossible.

We already changed the cables and tried to reset the Uniti  to factory settings but unfortunately that didn’t help. Do you have an idea what is wrong and what we can do?

This shouldn't be a problem. You connect your Star by an Ethernet cable to your wifi router. And you connect your iPad to the wifi from the router. The connection between the iPad and your Star is by wifi from iPad to router and ethernet cable from router to Star.

If your router wifi signal is weak then the best way is to add a wifi access point which you can either connect by cable back to your router or you can position it half way where the wifi from the router is strong enough.

The Uniti doesn’t connect directly to the app , they both talk to each other over your network. As long as your iPhone/iPad is connected to your WiFi, it should find the Uniti through its wired connection.

It’s worth killing the app by swiping it off the screen and then reopening it again. It sounds as though the app is struggling to see the router. You need to sort the WiFi out to avoid continuing frustration.

Thanks for the answers. That is exactly what the dealer told to me.

But I can only decide between Wifi or LAN. When I have a Wifi connection and plug in the cable, the Wifi connection stops (it changes to grey and inactive in the display of the Uniti Star) and in the settings I get a message "No Wifi setup during LAN connection" - see screenshot (in German). Until I disconnect the cable the Wifi connection is restored.

I tried different cables and different settings. The problem persists. Maybe it is just a handling problem, but what is wrong?

You only need the LAN connection - the answers above explain why you don't need wifi enabled on the Star.

As James says and as I said before, your Star is working properly. Your iPad should look at your router's wifi not wifi from the Star.

The Star connects to the router with a wire. It is much better to use the wire than WiFi.

The iPad connects to the router with WiFi.

The iPad sends signals to the router, which sends them along the wire to the Star.

The iPad does not communicate directly with the Star.

If your WiFi is bad, the iPad cannot connect properly to the router.

Does that make sense?

Yes I understand that all. But why does the Wifi disconnect in the moment the Star is connecting with the router by cable connection?

Maybe it is a router problem, but I couldn't find out what is wrong. At the moment it is frustrating

The Star turns off its wifi connection when you plug a cable in because it only wants one network connection. So this is working properly.

Then you put your iPad onto the wifi network from your router and when you start the Naim app, it will see the Star as described by all of us.

If you are talking about the wifi signal from your Star which you use to setup the wifi connection of the Star, then the wifi from the Star will vanish when you plug the cable in.

But now you control the Star through your router's wifi, the same as if you want to browse the Internet or something.

Does your broadband router actually have wifi I wonder?

Are there any firewall settings on your router ... it appears to me that there is something blocking connections from WiFi reaching the Wired network.

You say "But why does the Wifi disconnect in the moment the Star is connecting with the router by cable connection",   if what you say is correct,  it should not do that & it's indicative of something in your router.

Normal op is the Star shuts off it's (the Star) wifi connection when on a LAN,  thats correct.   But the router wifi should still be working & communicating with iPad & other wifi devices.      What is the router make/model ???

I don't think the OP has yet understood that the wifi he should be connecting his iPad to is generated by the router and not by the Star. When he plugs in the ethernet cable the Star shuts down its wireless setup of course and that's what is troubling him.

It's a FRITZ!Box 7390. In the router settings I can see the Uniti Star (LAN) as well as the iPhone/iPad (Wifi). But no connecting between iPad/iPhone and Router > Star can be established. But the iOS devices are definitely connected to Wifi (I can access the internet and my desktop computer, but not the Uniti Star)

On your iPad ... download Net Analyser (from the App Store - the Lite version is free).

Start the App and scan your network - make sure you can see your Uniti Star from that as a first step.

You access the UnitiStar using the Naim app running on your iPad. When you start the app you select set up new product and then select the Star and the app should then find the Star via its wired connection.

As David has suggested,  its missing the apps set up new product,  this should 'find' the Star MAC address or if not you need to add it manually.   Its all part of find my rooms function.  I'm not familiar with the workings of a Star,  but it should be no different to any other product.     Maybe worth deleting the app & reinstalling as that will take you back to the beginning & open up the select a new  product screen.

Hello It's me,

is it possible that you are a German, maybe I can help you in German Language to explain you

about the Wlan and Lan Connection.

It works !

Maybe the mistake was that I was too impatient. I expected that I can connect the Uniti Star by cable and in the next moment I can access the Uniti from iPhone/iPad. Yes, the Wifi connection between iPad App and Uniti was closed after I plugged the cable. I had to wait some minutes then I could reconnect the App with the Uniti and everything worked well.

I don't know why I didn't notice that time ago that I have just to wait
