A Spare Shelf?
Posted by: TK421 on 24 April 2018
I have just purchased another shelf for my rack from the famous auction site. Not sure if I needed it at this moment in time, but I did get it for a what I considered to be a good price.
My current rack is as follows (from the top):
- Turntable
- NAC N272
- Uniti Core & Phono Amp
- NAP200
My question - where do I position the spare shelf? or do I separate the Core and phono amp?
All suggestions are appreciated.
There are two logical places, but I reckon I'd put it beneath the N272. Let's see if Darke Bear has a recommendation.
I would try to put the phono amp further from the power amp, perhaps by putting the extra shelf in between. You could also keep the Core, with its internal linear power supply, away from the phono amp by removing it from the rack altogether. All it needs is a network connection.
Of course, the real improvement from the extra shelf will come then you put an XPS on it!
Many thanks both.
Funnily enough I had thought about an XPS but am not sure which way to go first, i.e do I keep the 200 and add the XPS or do I swap out the 200 for a 250DR?
Funds will not stretch to both at present.

If you’re going to do both upgrades sooner or later, I would just go for whichever you can get a good deal on, but I would go for the XPS first. Unless the 200 is hard pushed to drive your speakers well, in which case the 250 might be a bigger priority.
Yes, power supply on source is usually a better use of funds vs new power amp.
Regarding your rack...I like the TT on a dedicated shelf at a proper level for ease of use. Then I would put your phono pre on the top shelf with the pre/streamer below it.You could use the "extra" shelf to create a bit more space between the phono pre and the pre/streamer. Just my .02....

Mark, I take your point about a dedicated TT shelf.
My problem (I think) is the house is timber framed. I kid you not when I say you can feel the house shake if the front door is shut too firmly.
I can visualise the stylus skimming across those records as I type this.
I'm for putting more space between the 272 and the turntable, so this is where the new (empty) shelf would go, TK
You'll be surprised at how 'OK' an empty shelf looks.
Dispite what many say ( that a turntable sounds great on top of a fraim ) I disagree...my LP 12 sounded so much better when moved to its own dedicated tiger paw shelf ...
That would give you two free spaces...put the phono on its own shelf and move the amp further away from everything...untill the XPS comes !!
A turntable shelf on a wobbly wall is likely to be a bad performer. For the OP, I wouldn’t chance it.

Well, you could tell the family to evacuate the house during listening session, and then enjoy the music in your favourite spot. ;-)

A wobbly wall ?????
What sort of house do you live in...
A wobbly fraim yes ....a rock solid wall with valcan wall shelf....much better

I was referring to the OPs comment on his stud walls being flimsy, which is not unusual, especially in newer houses.
I think it was debs who did an excellent picture write up on strengthening a stud wall ...
Thanks all for your suggestions, you have certainly provided a few options (including adding a PS) so in effect no spare shelf.
It is fair to say that the internal walls of a modern timber framed house are wobbly and as such I'm not in favour of fixing a TT shelf, although since adding a core I haven't used the TT that much and so the suggestion by Timo of encouraging the family to get out so that I can listen without fear of record damage is not daft at all.
Perhaps I could restrict my vinyl listening to when they are out (fairly often) hence allowing me to have a dedicated TT shelf after all.
I will ponder that whilst trying to source a good deal on a PS.
