CDX2 to be discontinued?

I have also recieved an email stating that Naim will cease production of the CDX2 on the 16th of June but will continue with the CD5 Si.

Have to wait and see if Naim confirm.

Just out of curiosity, emails from who? Since you're waiting for Naim to confirm.

It seems Naim is bound to phase out CD playing production altogether just like they did with their speakers line. I wonder what’s next for the chop?

The only savings grace for it is that it's a stepping stone into separates

But it's also too good ..for its own good ... against the new upstart all in one's..

It's all about how many they are selling and I think the CDX2, great though it is, is quite expensive, so probably the answer is not many these days.

It also coincides with production of the new streamers and I think it was Richard mentioned the investment and work changing over to the new work stations for product build and integral bench testing. This comes several years after Linn pulled out of CD, so not too much of a surprise.

I absolutely LOVE my CDX2.2. It sounds terrific without the additional power supply.
Its my only source for music and I'm very happy with CD as a format just as it is.
Surely I cannot be the only one...?
The cd format is not broken - not everyone wants to stream - and yet this announcement seems somehow inevitable.
Such a shame.
I deliberatly bought the CDX2 (ex demo)  last year precisely because the CD format seems to be rapidly declining and I wanted a reliable cd player that will last me for many years to come.
A salute to those on here who still love and use their CDX2.

Giant leap——No you are not alone,I too use CD as my only source.Wheather I will move to streaming or not I don’t know because I’m so computer unfriendly .Wouldn’t know how to download or purchase music online so hope that the sales of CD’s will continue and that Naim will be able to repair my CD player if and when it needs that TLC.

I intended my comment more generally but it works personally too as I freewheel into retirement.

Actually CD was a downhill step and I held out as long as possible, the CDX2 was on the way back up and as far as I got (with 555ps) before deciding I need the storeage space for more vinyl and getting a Core, it remains to be seen where the ND555 will land but I expect vinyl to still have the better of it. The CDX2 meanwhile has a new lease of life in our bolt hole in France where the CDs are gradually joining it.

Looking back, CD as a format was doomed from the start. Among the reasons:

1. It was compact in size and took up little room. Hard to impress folks with that. No special stands needed, no special forging, milling, etc. though some tried this angle.

2. It was fuss free and easy to use. No VTA, compliance, capacitance, loading, tracking force, alignment, and other issues to fixat on and fuss about. 

3. CD players were not typically sold as component parts as were, turntables, arms, arm stands, supplental arm weights, phono cables, and cartridges. As a result they were very boring, leaving the audio obsessed with almost nothing to worry about except the music.

As a result of its ease of use, quality, and durability, long term industry profitability was compromised. 

The answer? Return to vinyl. What opportunities! More and more turntables, arms, cartridges, isolation platforms, mm, mc, phono stages, alignment guages, direct drive, belt drive, rim drive, remastered, digitally remastered, european cut, american cut, virgin vinyl, non- virgin vinyl. Oh gosh, the good old days were back. Finally, we could stop talking about the music and start talking about what we really loved all along.......THE EQUIPMENT! WoooooHoooo. 

For our millenial children and all those unfamiliar with actual records  we now have an opportunity to be equally obsessive with computer audio. Downloading, resolution rates, servers, network storge, network switches, DSP, network players, DACs, toslink, rca, USB, USB interfaces, Tidal, Spotify, MQA. Ah, life is again good. The turntable has been reinvented as computer music. And again, so much to discuss. 

Yes CD, thanks for the memories.

I love my LP12. I don’t talk about it much. Love my CDS3 too, but it is little used. I personally find streaming uninteresting. The process leaves me cold. On SQ grounds alone it’s vinyl for me, it involves me in a way digital media has never managed. Apart from buying the Linn my system has been unchanged since 2003 so not a gear man really.

I think it’s a shame the CDX is to be discontinued though.

I would choose a second-hand Rega Isis/Isis Valve anyday of the week

It lacks one thing only and that is a DIN connection on the rear panel

But it also doesn't have that lovely Naim swing open door and that moment of anticipation as you clamp the disc with the puck and close the door again with a gentle thunk noise....

Until it sadly died behind repair a few years back, I used a  Micromega Trio for 20 or so years. This was a beautiful 3 box (transport, DAC, PSU)  stack design with the transport on top. It was a top loader, with a hinged Perspex lid which you lifted up, a large puck which covered the whole CD, leaving you mastering the art of lifting the lid and then balancing it with an elbow, picking up the CD with that arm,  lifting the puck with your other hand and placing the CD down while not moving your elbow from the lid. It became second nature quickly, I replaced it with a CD5X and it seemed unnatural to not have to contort myself to play a disc.

I know what you mean. You have to suffer for your music......

From what I heard recently CD purchase is on a small increase in western Europe/UK, but I guess the market for quality high end CD players is limited as many Hi-Fi enthusiasts I suspect in the market for CD replay will be going for a streamer transport and ripped CD. Therefore I guess the market for top end players is limited and that coupled with the dwindling supplies of the current Naim CD laser mechanism and possibly even the HDCD DSP chipset, the cost of redesigning a quality platform from the ground up just might not be tennable.

I enjoy my CDX2 and it spins discs frequently ... and I am assured if it gets poorly then Naim will repair it.

Also it’s CD or ripped CD for me so as to avoid that often awful audible watermarking injected into lossless digital downloads

For me CD media is still the most convenient  way of music playback.

i still have a Rega P3 and collect vinyl pretty much on regular basis but i use very little (very few hours in a year).

Like alternative to my cd player i' d need a U.Serve or Core and  cables or wi fi connection, a streamer with related psu. 

I very much regret having sold my my CDX2-2 when i upgraded to CD555. I also have a couple of DVD5 but i'm considering  to get another

CDX2 new or used.

One day it would be very disappointing for me to rely with another cd manufacturer (albeit there are quite excellent solutions on the market ) in the contest of a full Naim system.
