CDX2 to be discontinued?

I’ve just received  an email with the news that Naim is to discontinue the CDX2 on 16/06/2018.

Am thinking of selling my EMM Labs XDS1 player & getting a CDX2.  Currently I have the ability to play SACDs, but I really don't play them all that often, and I think I'd like to try something different.  It would be nice to listen to an occasional disc instead of ripping everything.

I have actually just started buying CD's again recently for ripping purposes and they are excellent value.  In my set up I can tell no real difference between a £3 16 bit CD Rip or a £15 High Res file and with CD's I have a hard copy to rip again should anything go wrong.

As for CDP's I never really took to them and never invested enough to find out what they are capable of so if a very good one came along at a decent price would I buy one?  My Mrs would be pleased if I did she hates streaming.

As a strict physical media user, I'd be interested to hear details as to what she hates about streaming. Sound? Functionality? Complexity? The value in buying used CDs versus hi-res downloads is obvious.

At the moment i'm considering a couple of of 2nd hand options or possibly i' ll place an order for a new one.

Smart move on NAIM's part. I can't believe the that even the 5si will be around long. It's hard to justify a CD player at those price points when they are both blown away by using a Uniti Core into a good DAC. Linn decided this some years back too, I just can't see who would part with that kind of money for a standalone CDP at those prices when there is just so little upside to it.

Isn't the CD5xs also now discontinued?

Yes, when will the CD5si bite the dust?  Probably if/when those mechanisms get scarce.

Smart or not, everyone has different tastes. I don't see much the point to use a turntable these days. Very incovenient use, very variable press quality (scratches, warped records etc.)  I still collect vinyl btw.

"blown away"

Somewhat excessive, perhaps?

Since the CDX2 has been, by some margin,  Naim's longest running CD player ever, it is not surprising that there is a problem with keeping adequate stock of high quality parts. Still I, for one, will be very sad to see it go.  For me it was the CD player that really made CDs sing.  Other CD players were either too harsh or too dull. The CDX2 got it just right both for rock and classical music. As far as I can tell it may be the last Naim component to really have the drive and vitality (aka PRAT) that I loved when I first came to Naim over twenty five years ago. Since then it has seemed to me that the typical Naim sound has got more balanced, more sophisticated or as one dealer said to me "more mature".  But for sheer drive, excitement and emotion you have to go back to the old olive components or listen to the CDX2.

Long may Naim keep maintaining all the old CDX2s with all those parts which are not being made into new CDX2s.
