Connecting a Nap 200 to a Nait XS

Posted by: Swan on 25 April 2018

Hi everyone,

I have acquired a NAP 200, how do I connect the power amplifier to my Nait XS without an external PSU? Is there a special 5 pin to 4 pin din? There is no example of this listed in the user manual , is it possible, or do I need  flatcap / hicap as per the connection guide?

Thanks

I don't think Naim recommend connecting these without a PSU in line...?

At least that was what my dealer told me when I enquired a few years back.

Memory is sketchy but I don't think it can be done. *cap needed I think.

As the folks mention above, it's not an approved upgrade and there is no off the shelf Naim cable available to allow you to do this. The natural upgrade path for the XS is an external supply which provides two dedicated 24v rails to the pre-amp stage rather than the single 24v sourced from the internal Nait XS power supply when the link plug is in place.

I'm not sure what the rest of your kit is, but if you're considering keeping the 200 then look at a 202 or 282 to front the 200. The 200 can happily power either pre-amp without the need for an external PS which will get you started.

Personally i think the XS is a lovely amp and works best on its own or with a FC XS in tow so consider your options carefully.

Ok thanks. Will weigh up the options. I have a flat cap 2 being repaired currently, so will wait for its return before I can try the xs/fc2/200 combo.

Im sure a “proper” pre amp won’t be too far away in the future.

What's your source? There are good 272 deals in the second hand market.

Project -  rpm 5.1 turntable and a pioneer n50a for streaming internet radio/dac from iPod. I like the look of the 272 but it doesn’t do airplay which is annoying.....

If you have a NAS, then you can run LMS (Logitech Media Server / Squeezebox Server) and use the UPnP Bridge and Airplay bridge to provide Airplay to the 272 (and any UPnP streamer without Airplay).

Or the simpler option add a Airport Express.

Thanks but that is way above my head lol. Adding more boxes feels a bit bloaty.

I have got a massive digital music collection, but I hardly ever use it now that Spotify/Apple Music exists. I might look into a NAS though and have a look at the old collection.

Maybe Naim will update their streamers soon to include all the latest tech as per the muso.

New streamers are already here, the Muso is pretty much 'legacy'!! Have a look on the website.

Yeah but they’re “all in one”. Otherwise it’s the nd5 or xs (with no AirPlay) if I want to add a naim streamer to my existing amplification?

New separates are out this summer, ND5XS 2, NDX2 and ND555
