Core vs Qnap Nas, my twopence worth

Posted by: Rich 1 on 26 April 2018

The continuing debate on Uniti Core vs Nas, or more accurately Nas vs Nas.
Just to wade into the debate with my 2 pence worth as I have both Qnap dual core, 2 Bay Nas and single bay Uniti Core Nas.
Preamble; System comprises Qnap and Uniti Core Nas, NAC-N272, NAP250 DR and PMC 20 24 speakers, (all auditioned before purchasing). I’m in my early 60’s so don’t hear much above 10k. My wife and I go to plenty of live venues both miked and un-miked. We want our music to remind us of the live events.
Experiment;
Ascertain possible differences between Core and Qnap Nas.
Methods;
1 Rip cd to Core.
2 rip cd to Qnap via pc and correctly set up Exact Audio Copy.
3 Copy from Qnap to Core Downloads folder, altering metadata to differentiate recording.
Results;
1 Direct from Core. Sounds good, slightly warm sound, very involving.
2 Direct from Qnap. Sounds good, similar amounts of information as Core but presentation of music is slightly different, dryer sound, not unpleasant, and maybe not quite as involving to my ears. Blind tests with my wife, she heard a difference and consistently preferred the Core. That's one reason we went for the Core.
3 Copy from Qnap to Core. Music is similar to direct rip to Core.
Conclusion;
Qnap and Core deliver the same amount of information but present it in different ways. I prefer the slightly warmer sound of the Core and to me it’s far more involving. Heard in isolation both are acceptably good. If my memory serves me correctly the difference in sound is similar although not exactly to the difference between early high quality cd players and say an LP12 turntable. What’s right for my wife and I might not be to others taste. If you and your partner can’t hear the differences between Nas then go for the best value. If you can hear a difference then go with your ears.
My unsubstantiated conclusion is that all Nas’s may add their own signature to the sound. Why that might be is not my problem!

Have you tried the Core’s SPDIF output to N272, compared to via network? If not, that is an option you have that could be worth assessing. SPDIF would avoid any network vagaries, so all else being equal my expectation would be that if there is any audible difference the SPDIF should be the better sounding. But it also depends on any difference between the renderer in the Core with that in 272, and any SPDIF cable influence.

Not sure why, but the Core to my 272/250DR sounded much better via UPnP than via SPDIF which sounded “constricted”.

You weren’t using a boa cable, by any chance?

No, not Naim’s, but a Belden 1694A BNC-BNC digital cable from Blue Jeans cable, well reviewed here in the US.

HI Innocent Bystander. I trialled the Core’s SPDIF output to N272 using dealer recommended cable but didn't like the music so much so it went back, the difference was very subtle and nowhere near the difference between Nas. After trialling the dealer said he preferred Upnp.   Rich

Rich, I am trying the core at the moment against my synology nas. Ive found exactly the same as you. I also tried an audioquest vodka ethernet cable which gave much more air and separation to the music.

Hi Rich - After hearing my Core via UPnP to my 272/250DR, I then connected them with a BNC-BNC digital cable made by Siltech (Golden Eagle), S/PDIF to my 272 digital in.  Unlike you, I noticed an immediate improvement to the SQ when using the digital cable.  Subsequent to that, I purchased a Dave DAC and now run my Core to the DAC and then into the 272.  Wow.  I'm going to buy some better quality ethernet cables, but at the moment, digital cable out from the Core S/PDIF is the way to go for me.

I agree,same here DOCMARK,but I am going directly into the 272.This makes me wonder if maybe I need to think about a fancy switch and Ethernet cables...

It seems there's many permutations to try as and when funds permit. I'm in for the long term so will be trying power supply's vs dac's, leads etc. I also have a very obliging dealer. Rich

Thanks Rich, this is very useful insight!

But I presume you are using a UPnP server on-board the NAS. Try moving the UPnP Server to separate hardware out of the NAS noisy environment and let the NAS just be a NAS.

With Asset you can also transcode any compressed PCM, such as FLAC, ALAC or lossy formats (MP3, AAC) to uncompressed WAV, at the final stage before the Network Streamer. This should clean up any network based interference and reducing the processing demand on the Network Streamer, and therefore the current draw from the PSU, less noise etc etc.

i run Asset on a Raspberry PI 2, on an optimized lean OS, so just the elements to run Asset as a headless server, with a Linear Power Supply serving my NDS/555DR. This effectively is what you are getting with the UnitiCore, as a Linux based UPnP server with LPS.

For Ripping, I have a laptop with CD/DVD drive, and dBPoweramp, so able to extract bit perfect rips, however I download a lot, so no real need/use for hyper expensive ripping server solutions as with UnitiCore or UnitiServer.

Simon (away on business at present, and looking forward to getting home, and powering up the system for some tunes)
