Posted by: fred47 on 27 April 2018

Hi All,

My local dealer ( Naim authorized) suggested to me that the Core can''t  be used as a stand alone cd player. Its hard to believe but is this treu?

Sorry Fred, I’ve just had a quick look and can’t find where it says that

I must admit that I hadn’t even tried and am sure that you can’t play CDs on it as it’s there to rip CDs to internal/external drives as well as storing hi res downloads etc. I would have thought that a dedicated CD player would offer much better performance anyway. I use my Oppo 205 if I need to spin a CD and that’s not very often.

No need to be sorry Pinkfan. I guess it is my mistake. It actualy saying stand alone digital source! But in translation into Dutch some websites thinking this is a cd player

Ah ok. I think that’s referring to the fact you can play the stored music via a DAC as well as UPnP.

Or you can play it into a digital input on your preamp if that has a dac inside of course.

But you can't use it as a standalone CD player, except by letting it rip the CD and playback the rip, which only adds a few minutes before the sound starts.

best

Finkfan, is your taste in music evolving?

Naim do point out on the Core support page that it can’t play CDs, unlike its predecessor, the Unitiserve, which could, over its SPDIF output. Personally, I would never bother with this when you can rip it in 5 minutes.

You have a Uniti Nova, right? How are your first impressions?

You can also play a stored rip while it is ripping a new cd.

Klout 10, who are you asking? If it is me "Yes I do have a Nova and a Core". Can"t say anything substantiel now. Running in at the moment. So First impresions do not say much at the moment.

Hi,

Just to confirm - the Core cannot be used as a 'live' CD player, you would need to rip the CD and then play back the rip as has been stated above.

Cheers

Phil

Klout, if it’s me, I have had a Nova since launch, added a 250 dr, then 300 dr......even without the add on power amps it’s a great product, very musical, dynamic and have had no problems. I have not tried the hdmi as I use optical from my set top box.
