Hi Line about to go in the bin

Posted by: Catcat on 27 April 2018

Is there a particular knack to fitting this properly?  Been struggling for over an hour now to connect the amp end after a small faff with the source end.

No pins are bent and all still wiggle around, but I can’t feel like it’s ready to engage and of course don’t want to apply unnecessary force.  Every now and then I reinsert the old fixed-pin lead which just slides in. That makes me even more angry!  Even tried turning amp on side and upside down to see if that would make the pins fall into place, but no.

Any hints/tips gratefully received before I consider using it as a belt.

Just looked at mine and the Naim logo is at the top and square to the NDX casing, just give it wiggle and it should slide.

Good luck

Thanks Karl, that’s how it’s currently aligned, but no joy. I think the fear is also pushing too hard, but definitely have felt once like it was ready to engage. ARGHHH

Just be gentle with it and all will be fine. Don’t be too rough of those plastic decoupling rings could come adrift adding to anger and frustration.....

You could try it the wrong way round with the grey band at the Pre input just to make sure the pins are not bent if it goes in easily it should go in the source easily.

Maybe worth a try.

That would mean removing the end I somehow got in.  No chance!

The pins look ok on the amp end, so still persevering...

Update: my wife came into the lounge to ask why I was so stressed.  She asked to have a go and did it on her second attempt

She has the wiggle

Well, at least someone knows what they are doing!

(sorry, couldn't resist )

Haha absolutely.  Clearly my technique needs some work :/

All turned out well in the end, remember to pull it out now and again to maintain a good connection or perhaps not

Clearly you need to get in touch with your feminine side!

Glad you got it sorted. I know how stressful it can be, judging how much brute force to use on delicate and expensive cables.

The Naim logo on my Hi-Line is about 23 degrees off centre on both ends to be in alignment. You may find it easier next time to use a torch and take note of the position of the socket's holes and the position of the cable's pins rather than taking any notice of the position of the logos or anything else.

It should insert with not a lot of force that feels out of the ordinary.

Hi Stephen - exactly that - I was lining up the Naim logo dead centre on top. Looking at how my better half finished the job, the Naim logo is slightly offset.  Actually - very offset at the 23 degrees you mention.

“Next time”??  Cable is in forever!

[@mention:1566878603896197] ‘s Wife didn’t know the expense, so was able t use the required brute force rather than pussying around (pun intended) worrying about breaking it!

Don't bet on it. You will probably have to send the b... thing back to Salisbury within a couple of years - you will soon realise that HiLines are extremely fragile. Just looking at the plastic rings is enough (I assume it's your first HiLine).

Mine was faultless for the years I had it, eventually being replaced by an SL interconnect.

As Swiss Tony would say.......inserting your Hiline is like making love to a beautiful woman

Thanks, DelR. I'd forgotten all about Swiss Tony.

Dealer’s advice was “It’s just a case of being gentle and taking your time“.

I think we can see a general theme here!

How's it sounding?

Do you think you have done the thing?

I use mine on my entry level Naim gear and feel that I did although I could of put the money elsewhere in my system. I have found it gives a deeper but a more relaxed presentation with a wider setting. I think if one has quite bright speakers and they find their system a little on the harsh side then the Hi-Line is a welcome addition but saying all this I haven't quite exploited it's full potential yet.

It can be quite fussy with installation too, best to do a search and get to know it's quirks.

Hi Stephen

Difficult to tell immediate differences, particularly as I’m breaking in new speakers (yesterday) but certainly nothing negative to report.

Yes I understand it’s very fussy. I swapped all my kit over on it’s different levels on an AV rack so it could hang better, then realised I now couldn’t reach the NDX/SN on/off switches without pulling the whole unit out - so had to swap it all back. So it’s not hanging particularly loose and is laying on a speaker cable - not ideal but I’m too tired to deal with it now!

For me, when I had a HiLine, listening to it was like making love to a beautiful woman…….

I had the same issues with my Hi-Line.  There's no secret, just luck and patience.  It may connect first time, or you may be cursing it an hour later. I give mine 5 minutes and if I haven't managed to connect it then walk away from it and try afresh later.  Personally I would leave well alone once it's connected as my experience is that they are a real pain to connect.  However, once successful you will wonder why it was so difficult.  Disconnecting and reconnecting it a few times doesn't seem to make the process any easier.

Suggest you mark the top of the plug with a felt pen now that it is fitted so that if you remove it it will be easier to realign and reinsert.

Enjoy the music,

Richard

Crikey. After reading this I’ve made a mental note to avoid Hi-Lines in any future upgrade decisions...

The Hiline. According to some here it's a real engineering marvel. What had me marveling was why/how an interconnect was designed making it at times so frustrating to connect. My Hiline developed a misaligned pin on the amp end. Naim sent me a new one under warranty. I immediately sold it and am forever done with Hilines. As for SQ, the Hiline is excellent with a Naim CDP.
