Hi Line about to go in the bin
Posted by: Catcat on 27 April 2018
Is there a particular knack to fitting this properly? Been struggling for over an hour now to connect the amp end after a small faff with the source end.
No pins are bent and all still wiggle around, but I can’t feel like it’s ready to engage and of course don’t want to apply unnecessary force. Every now and then I reinsert the old fixed-pin lead which just slides in. That makes me even more angry! Even tried turning amp on side and upside down to see if that would make the pins fall into place, but no.
Any hints/tips gratefully received before I consider using it as a belt.
I found the hi-line din-din to be a great upgrade acoustically from the standard lavender cd player interconnect. Forever concerned about the fragile nature of the plastic rings and the dead weight of the cable pulling down over time. My first one disintegrated and had to be returned. The replacement one eventually 'sagged' a bit - not quite broken, not quite right! I opted for another manufacturer's solution rather than persevere. Not sure if they were ever re-engineered to make the connector more robust, but one answer appears to be upgrade to super lumina - albeit at a very significant and for many, too great a cost increase. At some point in time you will have to disconnect - my suggestion is to take a digi photo of the correctly aligned and installed connections, save them on your computer and have them available when that time comes round.

Hi Peter
I borrowed a dealer’s Hi Line a while back and had no issues at all with insertion. Yet this time was an ordeal.
Part of the issue was me steadfastly sticking to the Naim logo being dead level going into the SN. Looking at Richard Dane’s comment elsewhere “that the DIN socket orientation angle is slightly different between a PCB mounted DIN and a chassis mounted one”, that may have contributed to things.
Thanks to everyone for the advice and guidance. If you’re also having Hi Line issues, my recommendation in return is to let your other half have a try
I wonder if, longer term, there is a sensible way, which will not affect sound quality, to slightly support the dead weight of the cable and reduce the physical downward pull/ pressure on the plastic ringed connectors. My suspicion, which may be wrong (!), is that the connector can become fatigued over time.

Yes, the slightly different orientation of the pin layout between PCB mounted DINs and chassis mounted DINs can catch one out with the Hi-Line if you're unaware of it. Always easier if you can clearly see what you're doing, but not always possible when sockets are located at the back of the kit.
Those that have great trouble getting the Hiline in can probably take solace that it'll sound better than one that just slides in.

Thanks, DelR. I'd forgotten all about Swiss Tony.
Blimey, I hope her decoupling rings didn’t fall off too
I too am ticked off with the hiline. Never had quite the difficulty of the OP, but having just got it back from repair a few months ago, I just moved the cable a bit to make it hang better and broke one end. Then the kitten managed to break the other end... (she loves looking out of the windows and the only window to the front is above the system)

Will you be getting another cat? ????
The cat is staying. But currently using a witch hat interconnect which will stay until I get round to having the hiline repaired
Lol. ☺ How does the WH compare ?
It’s been in for a couple of weeks - due to the pain of swapping back and forth with hiline I haven’t swapped back - but seems pretty good.
Count the pins, then count the holes and check the configuration of each (180 / 240 degrees).
If they match up, keep wiggling, if they don't then get the right cable, or plug it in the right socket. (This has happened to me before... I was sure I had the right plug in the right socket... until I counted the pins & holes and configuration (180 deg & 240 degrees)
