Connecting Hi-Line

Posted by: Rotifer217 on 27 April 2018

I had the same issues with my Hi-Line.  There's no secret, just luck and patience.  It may connect first time, or you may be cursing it an hour later. I give mine 5 minutes and if I haven't managed to connect it then walk away from it and try afresh later.  Personally I would leave well alone once it's connected as my experience is that they are a real pain to connect.  However, once successful you will wonder why it was so difficult.  Disconnecting and reconnecting it a few times doesn't seem to make the process any easier.

I think the floating pins can sometimes pose a problem, as it just needs one of them to be slightly off target and the plug won't easily go in the socket.  I find it helps a bit to get a good idea of the orientation of the pin and socket layout before insertion.  There is a raised marker on the DIN plug to help but what can fox some people is that the DIN socket orientation angle is slightly different between a PCB mounted DIN and a chassis mounted one.

More apologist crap about yet another Naim cable.  I's sorry, but it shouldn't require a degree in mechanical engineering to plug in a cable.  I don't recall seeing other cable manufacturers talking in length about the orientation of the pin and socket layout.  Cable placement should be intuitive.  Either it fits or it doesn't.  Maybe Naim should include a special warning with their cables - "Warning - cable will require at least an hour's worth of pampering before fitting properly."

Charming.  Thanks.

I'm not apologising for anything, just trying to help.

Nothing personal Richard. I apologize for having offended you.  You do provide some very useful information and help..  I just think that things should work as designed.  I don't see why Naim cables have to be dealt with specially.  Having said that, I admit that I own several Naim cables, and find them all to be excellent performers.

Mind you, if you think the HiLine is challenging try the Chord Company  3 pin DINs - the used to drive me potty! No such problem with the SLs - beautifully made too.

Ah yes - I had one of those a few years. A bulky, stiff thing that was a royal PITA to get right. The Hi-Line was a much easier proposition !

Come on guys, this isn’t about another brand - not had any problems with their Din plugs btw -  so let’s stop being so defensive...

Anyway, during a very recent trip to Naim, Jason, Naim installer extraordinaire, demonstrated how easy it can be to hook up a Burndy,  in comparison to which a Hi-line is a total and utter doddle. It was expressed by all who saw how easy he made it that he should have his own YouTube channel. Maybe he should add a simple instruction on how to connect a Hi-line.

Good idea, Dave, though I suspect a YouTube video entitled 'how to massage your burndy' might attract some people who would be very disappointed at the content.

Yes, he did rival F1 pit stop tyre change speed with that Burndy swapping !
