4.6 Update: serial port problem

Posted by: easeback1 on 27 April 2018

Trying to install 4.6 firmware update on my N272. Downloaded the SL USB driver, which appears in my Macbook's (OS 10.10.5) system info.  But when I open the streamer updater, the 'select serial port to use' window is blank...

N272 connected to router via ethernet, with the Macbook connected via wifi.

I'm a bit confused by Naim's instructions here, as the accompanying diagram shows both laptop and streamer wired to the router:

"Please ensure that the product is connected to the same network as your Mac via a wired connection. If using a wireless connection, find and make a note of your products IP address."

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Below is the feedback I used to overcome the port issue. I completed by updated wirelessly for both Mac and 272. Hope this helps David

Hello,

Didn’t have time to read all of these posts, but if you have a later MacOS (10.13 is current), the operating system deliberately stops the driver from running as it isn’t trusted. I had this problem, which sounds a lot like the orginal issue, when using a USB cable to my NDX (not serial adapter) but it’s not Naim’s fault.

Try “Apple” menu -> “System Preferences” -> “Security & Privacy”. On the “general” tab, you might see a notice that SiLabs software (from an unidentified developer) has been blocked (at the bottom). There should be an “open anyway” button to allow it to run. Restart the Naim Updater app and see if that pesky driver isn’t listed!

Just to add to what David O/Seth says, you need both your PC/MAC and your 272 connected to your router either with ethernet or wifi. And the PC/Mac connected to the 272 by the USB cable.

The reason for this is that some of the update is delivered via the USB cable and some of it is delivered from the Mac to the 272 using the network connection. The product needs an IP address for this to work, hence the connection to the router.

Hi, this is because the upgrade process on the older architectures requires a network IP address discovery mechanism to upload the streamer board. There are some Wifi access points and Ethernet work arounds like powerline adapters  that don’t support this method properly, and if doing a wireless (Wifi, Powerline adapters etc)) upgrade the process could stall and not complete if you didn’t know the products assigned up address. So if the upgrade does stall, then you are prompted to manually enter the IP address that you have noted...

This is not (should not be ) an issue if using actual Ethernet

Thanks to all for the advice so far. All connections are correct and OS X security is set to 'allow all connections', but still no joy.

My 2013 Macbook has become a bit temperamental of late (e.g. Bluetooth connectivity suddenly kaput). Maybe the next step is to borrow a Windows laptop (with ethernet port) and try to update from there?

One other thought. I don't know whether this is true with MAC but with a Windows PC, the serial port only shows up in the drop down list if the Naim product is connected to the port. The key point here is that you need to have a USB lead that is wired for data. Those that came with mobile phones for charging from a USB port usually don't have the data connections made and those that came with digital cameras usually do have the data connections made. In any case even if you can select the port, the update won't work if the lead doesn't carry the data to the streamer!

Is this isn’t too much of a hassle, contact your friendly Naim dealer. He will be happy to assist you!

Argh, my first post on this forum in many years and it was a fairly stupid one. [Cringe]

The SI Labs download contains two USB driver packages. In my usual haste I installed the wrong one. The legacy driver should be used for OS X 10.10 and older. Maybe this can help others avoid the same schoolboy error...

And with the correct driver installed, the 4.6 update sailed through like a dream.

Still having issues with Tidal, but that's for another thread.

[Will endeavour to post more sensibly in future.]
