Nso1

Good morning, advice needed please as my knowledge is poor at best. I have a supernait1 and a recently serviced CD5 player connected to Dali epicon 2 speakers with tellurium ultra black speaker cable. I’m thinking of swapping the cd for a NS01- I can’t find much info online that answers my questions which are 1) Better audio from cd5 or from the ripped cds on the NS01 direct to SN1?

2) Does the NS01 connect wirelessly to my home internet so that I can connect the music stored on the NS01 to wireless speakers in other rooms?

3) Does the NS01 have internet radio?

4 Better to stick with what I’ve got presently?

Thanks for you time, again.

loving the naim sound by the way- 3 months naim user and so good

As nice as NS01 is it is old tech & is now stuck in its time zone.  New products do all you are asking about & more.   Have you considered selling your CD5 & Supernait & using the funds to get a Uniti Star, its an all in one  CD player that can rip, store and serve & includes a 70w amp, has wireless & internet radio & can be controlled with an iOS or Android tablet or smart phone app

The NS01 is well obsolete and in my opinion you would do well to steer clear of it.

But I think the answers are:

1) makes no obvious difference

2) No unless they are Naim units

3) No

4) yes. But you could probably pick up a Unitiserve quite cheaply which would potentially turn 1) and 3) into a yes.

A better approach would be to set out what you want to do and ask for advice here how to do it. For example a NAS might be a better way to go if you have a laptop.

Minor point of order:   the NS01 does have internet radio  .......     https://www.naimaudio.com/site...naimnet-psd_ns01.pdf                       .........     Its still well past its sell by date tho'

Thanks David. I am aiming to rip all my cds to a central source in as high a resolution as possible and then would like to be able to access this in different rooms via wireless speakers- not naim as too expensive.  However my main listening area is my living room where I would have everything physically connected for best sound quality as already mentioned. I would give up the CD player if a NAS or equivalent could give me very good sound quality. It may be that a Naim unity star or nova may be the best way to go.

HDX used to offer that functionality.

Nowadays you’d best off with a NAS and a good streamer like NDX.

Whoops! Thanks Mike and sorry Andy for the mistake. But I agree with Mike that it would be better to buy something newer, if you have the cash available.

Thanks. What do you think about the unity star? Is it a step down in sound quality or a step up - talking about my main living area. Also would this stream via WiFi to none naim speakers upstairs? Looking at the nova it doesn’t have a CD player so star would be better- does this have internal storage or would I have to buy another unit to store ripped cds on to?

I think a Star would be a step up from your present system, but probably not night and day.

At the risk of being contradicted by Mike again (!), I don't think you will be able to connect to non-Naim wireless speakers upstairs.

The Star doesn't have internal storage but you can rip to a USB hard disc or to a NAS so it isn't an issue.

The Nova is a step up from Star in quality terms but you would have to rip CDs on something else, like a PC, and store them somewhere, for example on a NAS.

Contradict !!!  Moi !!!   Heaven forbid.

Its an interesting question;  by 'wireless' speakers I assume that is Bluetooth. A lot of popularity around these & I don't hear of connectivity problems.    I know next to nothing about this but the new Naim Uniti's all have Bluetooth (aptX HD) so I guess its possible.    Anyone tried it yet I wonder.???

I think the Bluetooth on a Uniti is only to allow you to connect something with music on it to the Uniti, not to play from the Uniti to a loudspeaker......

Also even if it were bidirectional, the range of Bluetooth would make the performance very uncertain. I think Andy is talking about the Uniti connecting over the home network to non-Naim loudspeakers that are connected to the home network by wifi......

Appreciate all your help. I’m going to sell and buy a nova and then work out whether to get a uniti core or NAS to access ripped cds so I can play on the nova and also use home WiFi to be able to play to ‘WiFi’ speakers elsewhere in house. Thanks all again - invaluable advice

If all your music is stored on a NAS drive, any UPnP speaker/players can get their music from that NAS.
So you could, for instance, get "Sonos Play" wireless speakers for your extra rooms but, not to be able to play in sync with the Naim Nova (or other Units range).

Andy,

Following on from Blythe's post above, I use Sonos as a multi-room option and it supplements my main system very well. For relatively little outlay you could link a Sonos Connect to your Nova via its digital input and play anything through that and any combination of other Sonos speakers simultaneously or access different music on each one separately using the Sonos app.

On a separate note, the Epicon 2's are awesome.  Heard them recently and I'm very tempted!

That’s great advice re: NAS and sonos. They say ignorance is bliss but I find it frustrating! Thanks again chaps.

If the other devices you want to use around the house have UPnP streaming capability, then they will be able to play from an NS01, a Star, or a Nova with an attached USB hard drive. For example, Yamaha Music cast players would do this at a lower price than Naim streamers. Sonos would also play from a NAS, but probably not from a Star or Nova. Most of these devices will work over WiFi, but the NS01 or a NAS will need a wired connection to your network.

If you want a multiroom system where all players will play in sync, you will not be able to play on a Naim streamer and non-Naim devices at the same time. They are invariably proprietary systems that are not compatible with other brands. Roon may be a solution to this issue if it is important to you.
