(Naim Atom + Focal Aria 936) What do you think about this combination ?

Posted by: EddieKwon on 01 May 2018

Hello. I'm planning to buy the combination of Focal aria 936 and Naim atom.

The point that I'm worrying about is the power of atom.(Aria 936 is a big speaker)

I'm living in an apartment. so I'll not listen to the music loudly.

However I worrying about the sound quality and resolution.

will the resolution OK if I listen to the music not that loudly or do I need further power amp?

If You think I need further power amp, do you think Atom is a good choice?

(I'm gonna use the spotify that's why I choose Atom.(all in one) however don't have much information of Atom's preamp.)

Please help me to make a decision.

Thank you.

Min wattage is 50 according to specs so the Atom is under that, but the sensitivity is 92db so they are easy to drive that some big speakers Considering they do have a lot of drivers to push. I would say it might struggle. A nova or star would be a better fit I would say. You can add the nap200 to get the extra grunt but it may be more cost effective and get better sound from the beefier systems.

You really ought to listen to some other speakers too. No doubt there are some people who like Focal but there are a lot who apparently don't.

David is right, but it's about finding a good dealer with patience and your patience to not impulse buy ; ) and home demo 1 or 2, maybe even the 936.

But backing up a bit, I returned to Naim after a long time out, with a Muso and the Atom, then Nova.

With the Atom like a good obedient Naim sheep I wanted to hear Focals, but insisted on a shoe string budget and picked the Focal Chorus (book shelf), they were awesome with the Atom and even moreso with the Nova.

I did think about Focal 906 and did briefly listen to 926, but I am in a new build apartment, concrete floors but still not like my old detached place where VOLUME was not an issue, so I think bookshelf is a better plan as the Atom will easily drive the 926 and 936, but not sure what your neighbours will think, so you may end up at lower volumes.

Anyway, February I did the impulse thing, without a demo, bypassed the 906 and went Focal 1008be2, absolutely amazing with matching stands, remind me of my SBLs (enter tear here).

Back to Dave's point, in my setup the bass was VERY deep and these beast go VERY loud, only possible on rare occasions I work from home. Bass has been interesting to control but I got my setup perfect (Then 2.6 arghh). Point here again is 936 will also dig low and deep, neighbours ...

Oh I could not part yet with the Focal Chorus 706, still damn fine.

If you are just going to use Spotify I would purchase less expensive speakers, it really isn't worth it as you will be compromised by the material you are listening to.

However if you are prepared to spend more which you indicate you are as a power amp is suggested then why not consider the Star rather than the Atom.  With this you can play CD's or rip to local files or at least use Tidal which is better than Spotify but isn't as good as local lossless files.

If you are going to limit yourself to Spotify you may as well get a mu-so. It’s fine for casual listening but not much more.

Those Focals are very large, with lots of drivers, which makes one wonder what the quality is really like. For a total budget of £5,000 I’d suggest a Nova and some £1,000 speakers. You won’t go wrong with source first. But the ultimate source is the music, and ripped CDs, downloads and Tidal will be far, far better.

I missed the Spotify as main input, I found even on a Muso Tidal was superior, Spotify with my Atom and the Nova it's worse - but quite a few people are happy.

Like HH says set a budget and demo, Atom Or Nova are stunning, but depends on your end game, as an Atom will lead you to a Nova and then ...

I wanted the best Naim single box streamer setup, for space reasons and also based on solely Tidal (the ripping lark for me is not worth the effort), but as someone else mentioned the Star gives the ability to rip also.

Decisions, decisions, think and listen carefully (demo), lest you a few months in get the upgrade itch and the Atom will surely do that to you.

The Atom sounds gorgeous into bookshelf Totem speakers. Select according to budget and you'll be better off than with the Focals given your space and source.

High sensitivity and ease of drive aren't always mutual!!!

Hi, I run the Nova with a pair of Audio Physic Avanti. Beautiful sound, much better then B&W or Focals at this price range. And the Avanti is a real beauty. If you add an extra Subwoofer (as I did) to this Setup you will be blown away.

I have Focal Monitors as well and I went with B&W for decades.

I would try the Naim Star with the Audio Physic Avanti, the Avanti is not so demanding.
